Velasco is accused of killing Herrera in his home (velasco's). He flees and takes refuge in a church and convent. He later admits to the authorities that he did hit Herrera, but claims that Herrera attacked him and he reacted in self-defense. Velasco's defense attorney is able to collect depositions testifying to Herrera's reputation as a wild and reckless man who often sought to provoke others, and further testimony to Velasco's reputation as a pacific and diligent citizen.
