The University of Arizona Herbarium
Homer Leroy Shantz
A general view of the grounds. Aloes in the back, Pinus pinea also, and mountains with native heath and Protea in the back. Clouds on the mt. This national garden, a large tract of natural vegetation on the face of the mountain. The plan is to plant only the native things - from South Africa - to accommodate the native flora here in this wonderfully beautiful place. The funds are not ample, but are added to by the Botanical Society of South Africa. In every way this is a most attractive place and well worth visiting. [Shantz travel journal, Aug. 24, 1919]
