Potassium nitrate (flours out) at the edge of the shale cliffs and a large company - the South African Nitrate and Potash Company ltd., of which Mr. W. L. Calder is manager. This material is found almost pure - but I gather that it is only concentrated at the surface and not abundant in the deeper shale. [Shantz travel journal, Sep. 17, 1919]
