Description
Dutoitspan Mine - showing mopane logs used as mine timbers. (From Rhodesia.) This timber lasts well and is very strong except as horizontals where it is brittle. If the bark is left on it is very resistant to insects and fungi but if the bark is removed beetles eat it. Photo also shows, or should show, blue gum from Kunima [?] forest. This is good for horizontals - but dry rots rapidly. [Shantz travel journal, Sep. 22, 1919]
