Description
Panorama of a large native rice field. This is typical. Taken from the top of a large ant hill - planted to the top. Small brush cut down and burned - many of larger trees cut and left in place, and others left standing, especially the large ones with buttressed bases. Rice about 5 to 6 ft. tall - and corn ripe or near ripe (rice just coming into head). Rice planted in close and irregularly distributed hills - corn far apart. Corn is harvested out - ears taken off with husk on, and stalk left standing. Manihot is also scattered through while bananas are planted about everywhere. There are many young ones in this field. All work is done by hand, there is no attempt to form regular fields. But this one is probably a mile long. Rice just heading, corn ripe for the most part. [Shantz travel journal, Jan. 27, 1920]
