Description
Constructing a house. Poles of wood - and poles for porch shown at right. Oil palm petioles 20 ft. or more long used as cross pieces and tied firmly into place with small strips of rattan - which grows abundantly here. Although it seems to have been pretty well exterminated near the village. This building will be used as a soap factory - soap made from palm oil. Cocoanut now 400 to 450 francs per ton - was 150 one year ago. Oil nuts 1000 francs per ton a year ago. Freight from outside excessive. Dar-es-Salaam chief (or nearest) port, and surest transportation. [Shantz travel journal, Jan. 28, 1920]
