Description
Panorama of grassy mts. - see herbarium collection here. It shows a small patch of high forest in a cleft in the rocks or a steep ravine opposite elevation above the lake. It is seen therefore that these mts. are not very high. They are beautifully contoured - remind one of the hills along the ... River in Oregon - but are uniformly grassed over. And the little banana, manihot, corn plantations mark this as very productive. Often the soil is dark and rich looking. Along some of the ridges it is red and looks a little clay or lateritic like. Much like some of the Transvaal land between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Evidence of fire present in grass. [Shantz travel journal, Mar. 16, 1920
