Summary
Miners and vecinos state that new discoveries in Sierra de Tamaulipa in last 4 years provide legal standard of quality (6 ounces of silver for each load of metal), and proportions given for other qualities which exceed legal standard. Costs of firewood, transportation and other costs make it difficult to make profit. Need for greater population; enemy Indians have returned with depopulation in center of Sierra de tamuaulipa and Apostate Indians raiding surrounding area. Complaints of Nava's offering low price for silver and using Alcavala money to buy silver (attractive to miners as it saves transportation cost and robbery risk. In Guadalcazar, nephew of Nava levied 10 real Alcavala. Nava's influence with governor allows him to exploit situation. Charges that document supposedly from miners and vecinos is really false, need to interview witnesses. Description of founding of San Carlos in 1666 and formation real de San Joseph. Description of San Carlos church and other structures. Advantages of having established beneficio de metales at San Carlos. Suggestion of miners working metals in their own home in areas nearer to mines. explains how to contruct a galeme. Control of silver and transport to San Luis Potosi treasury. Noriega charges list of witnesses is incomplete, and agrees to provide documents to Bucareli. Testimonies on metal profits, Nava's conduct, discussion of abundances of metal, wood, water, ovens, transport costs, and amount of metal resulting after processing. List of owners on mines, number of workers on each, and ounces extracted per load (Leyes) of metal, and economic class of miners. List of depopulated mines. Also list of owners of patentes, galemes, and metal processing equipment (basso, dissetisor) according to location. Ocotillo and Barreta listed as most abundant wood for processing metals. Detailed testimony of Moreno. Notes that Indian spies keep apprised of affairs by posing as day workers in presidios and villages. Detailed discussion of Rio's and Moreno's crimes, including affirmative testimonies by other Spanish. Other Indians (tortuga, Luis, Bustamante) are convicted of spying and rebellion. Details Apache subsistence-- planting of corn, beans squash, eating of robbed horses and cattle. Meat distributed by leader Calaxtrin in times of need-- notes differential distribution of horse meat by occupation. Records that Apaches do not have formal homes (with exception of Calaxtrin, who has Adobe). Describes Apache movement for water by moon phases and hostilities, and how Apaches recover their dead to bury in Sierra Chivato. Recounts Apache 3 day use of hallucinogenic Peyote after a raid in which Apaches kill horses to cripple forces, eat neck meat of horse, break joints of cadavers and bury cadavers in a round pit covered with soil and rocks. Account of typical Spanish weaponry (shields, leather jackets, whips (?), fire, pikes) and of Indian weaponry (bow and arrow). Authorization to recruit personnel in Chihuahua to replace retired personnel and injured personnel. Transfer of two bison (civolos) from presidio Bahia to Mexico in route to Spain as gift to king. Various documents on disturbance of the peace. Request for teachers from Spain to guide Indians in the cultivation and process of linen. Burning of presidio Orcoquisa and establishment of new settlements in Coaguila. Payment of 10 and 5 pesos respectively by claimants of ownership of mules and horses recovered by military personnel set by viceroy. Maxent says detachment in Laredo in need of horses and clothing but asks Castro for permission to bring them home to rejuvenate company. Also families need assistance and protection. Acknowledges receipt of military licenses. Includes letters introducing monthly reports on developments and conditions of forces as requested. Requests permission for troops to travel to Mexico and Querataro to purchase supplies. Acknowledges instructions to treat Lipanes kindly in case of rival attack. Concerns testimony given at Mapimi by Thomas Funidad, who escaped after being a prisoner of Indians. Includes notes on various aspects of daily life and movement of his renegade captors including; their raid on San Salvador; number of their warriors; leadership; settlement pattern; ethnic composition of band; age of members of renegade groups; plants grown; taking of horse and other hides; bison hunting; horse and Mule herds kept; use of saddles and armas Blancas y de fuego; worship of an image of our lady of sorrows; clothing; houses (Jacales of horse hide); trade with plains Indians; treatment of captives; timing of attacks; drinking of pulque; document which provides exceptional details on these topics. Summary
Documents listing rights and obligations to citizens of Presas del Rey upon foundation of Villa by capitan de la Serna. Establishment of church, garrison, and other official offices. Requests by Serna to abolish residency, judgeship and sentencing surety as few people know him, he also requests title of capitan to be given to him as founder and teniente to his son Estevan, titles are approved. Priests requests money for sinodos and traveling expenses. Conde de la Sierra Gorda sends city charter, maps, titles of Solares to build houses viceroy frees Villa for Ten years payment of primicias to church. Other documents relate disturbances in town due to absence of priest. Document refers to historical event about sinodos when churches were secularized in 1734 by request of provincial of Zacatecas. Census of inhabitants with all their belongings including animals. Documents with measurements of land grants given to each family. (A. Dell'acqua, sept.1987)
