Letter found seeking money and help from other Indians in order to free Juan Tonate et Al from jail in Mexico, and to join together to kill missionaries; testimony taken from witnesses; three men from San Lucas and one from Guazamota sentenced to five years in jail; three of four released after four years served, one Dies in jail; prisoners questioned; prisoners transferred; judge named; captain expresses concern Indians in towns planning to come together in resistance; question whether letter fabricated by guazamotecos; idols found which point to unrest; captain stresses that Ladino Indians from San Lucas and Guazamota not be allowed to mix with Nayaritas; fray Ibarra doubts whether the Nayaritas involved in plot based on their rusticity; residents of San Lucas and Guazamota express fear that Tonate would kill natives and steal livestock when released from jail, so did not join conspiracy to kill priests; brigade formed to stem Indian hostilities; Nayaritas and guasamotecos seen to be quiet; bishop supports request to release prisoners as crime small in relation to punishment. Summary
Documents concern the death of the conde de Sierra Gorda. Gives lengthy biography of his services to the crown, of his settling and establishing of villages and repelling Indians attacks. A detailed account of his early military career in Querataro is given. His various promotions and especially of his successful campaigns against the Indians. A good account is given of his establishing of numerous towns and missions and of his pacification of the Indians and of their conversion to catholicism. Conde de Sierra Gorde decorated with the titulo de Castillo, thus freeing him of payment of Media Annata. Account of 1742 battle with English nation and of their attack on Veracruz. Later documents concern charges brought against him by citizens of his province for his over-aggressive style. royal commission sent to investigate. Conde de Sierra Dies before case completed. His son's role in defending his deceased Father against the charges. Commission's finding of no substance to charges. Additional letters concern the request that the governorship become a hereditary post and that the deceased's son, Manuel, shall be named as governor. His son's biography is extensively listed-military campaigns, settlement of towns, and pacification of Indians. A further request is made that assistance be given to the entire family. Names of family members given and their newly-granted offices and titles listed. Governorship granted to Manuel. Throughout the volume are good descriptions of founding of towns and resulting battle with the Indians. Folios 145-149 are especially strong in describing la Campana en Tamaulipas, including number of deaths, injured and prisoners taken. Also detailed are Indian banditry and the attempt to convert them through education and the missions. (P. Lenz, September 1989)

Summary
Concerns letter signed by several military officials who were in charge of campaign to recover Texas which was captured by Bernardo Gutierrez, a rebel aided by united states bandits coming from Luisiana. Letter mentions that rebels are talking about a new republic called republica Mexicana. Indians, it is said, have taken advantage of the situation and are attacking the provinces more often. Spaniards are exhausted, afraid, and want to go home to Spain. Supplies are needed to continue campaign against rebels in Texas. (M. Marroquin, may 1989)

Provincias Internas are divided into western, commanded by Ugarte y Loyola, and eastern, commanded by Dufay; Pinon [Pison?] eruptions cause Dufay to make military visits; Dufay searches for Capitancillos and Pinones, either they turn themselves in or a bounty will be placed on their heads - dead or alive; receipt of novedades and military reports; primera compania de Monterrey receives an alferez primero. Documents referring to contraband, murder, sexual crimes, desertions of military personnel, illicit drinks, civil and military appointments within Provincias Internas. By order of king a judge named to deal with illicit drinks. List of Seri families requesting peace. Unification of Seri rebel capitan with Apaches to wage war against Seris who surrendered and thru conquest of other smaller Indian groups to attack Spaniards. Invention of armor by teniente Bertucat and request to king to have licence to construct such armor. Autos against Capitancillo norteno Ramirez. Rebel Taraname Jose Luis sent to Havana's prison to avoid more rebellions in Texas. Civil suit by inhabitants of Villa Nombre de Dios to keep such village under jurisdiction of viceroy instead of Provincias Internas. Inspection and advise on compania de Milicianos from Texas by Anza. Wedding of capitan Fages. (A. Dell'acqua, April 1988)

Report made up of group of letters concerning vagrancy problems on northern frontier; includes notes on Indian attacks; need for Indian labor in mines and haciendas; payment to Indians in Inferior goods; use of Penal labor; reluctance of some Indians to work as day-laborers; visit of Galvez; legal actions of Galvez, Corbalan and others on pay; Croix's inspection; raids on various settlements; types of labor involving Indians (charcoal making; cultivation; Adobe making; mine drain construction; firewood and lumber cutting; livestock tending; Mule train servants; ore processing; and various mechanical arts); dangerous alliance of local Indians with Apaches; economic crisis that results from lack of sufficient Indian labor; problem of local Indian community demands on labor force; limited value of Indians in mines; seasonality of Indian labor demands; role of mulatos in mines; fugitive Yaquis in mining towns; ff. 348-355 includes copy of points 5-10 of Neve's general report of 1783; he finds explanation of rise in banditry in unfair use of forced Indian labor; he sets limitations on coroporal punishment in mission settlements (for example - six lashes for missing mass); he considers other matters involving civil justice; notes many of bandit's crimes falsely attributed to Apaches; use of presidio labor in new presidio constructions; ff 357-361 - Ugarte grants various rights to Indians of Pueblo of Santa Maria (4 December, 1787); this includes coverage of forced labor; payment in goods and cash; reviews earlier Indian labor policy; describes poverty and hunger of Indian day laborers; lack of spiritual guidance; locations of labor; character of culture change; importance of cheap Indian labor to economy, and failure of administrators to solve problems of Indian abuse become clear in this report.
