Originals, signed, copies. not been inspected for 21 years, 2) to determine cumanche- navajo-Spanish relations, and 3) to familiarize himself with the terrain prior to launching a military campaign. Reports to Ugarte y Loyola that all New Mexico troops are mobilized for action. Includes detailed diary of consequent campaign around Santa Fe in October 1787. Santa Fe campaign military force composed of presidial troops and cumanche and Apache xicarilla auxiliaries. Details include distance traveled, reports of scouting activities, geographical and weather details, and tabular breakdown of force into four divisions, listing commander, station, and force size. Rengel blames slowness of March on insubordination and unruliness of indian auxiliaries; virrey responds, suggesting exclusion of auxiliaries from main campaigns. Includes description of landmarks along route, information on jacales settlement patterns, high accuracy of niera's (?) Map, construction of bridge to cross Colorado river, battle tactics of reconnaissance and night attack, and peacefulness of cumanches. More specific campaign details are recorded in a division by division report. Virrey flores responds, encouraging more action and less writing. Ugarte y Loyola also reports events of Cordero's and bergara's troops in Nueva Vizcaya campaign (October 1787-mar 1788). Table illustrates organization of force into four divisions, showing locations and force size for each division. Each division presents account of indian hostilities and a report of military actions taken. Indian hostilities include general theft (horses, cattle, mules, burros, and oxen), murders, assaults on mule trains, corpse stripping, kidnappings, abductions, and massacre of mescales. Reports falseness of Apache and mescalero peace proposals, how indians bribe vecinos to spy on military cavalry movements and report these maneuvers to indians, indian custom of collecting ears of killed enemies, and indian ambush of officials attempting to track indians in mountains. Includes summary tables of indian hostilities and military combat statistics by indian group, province, and division. Provinces included are Sonora, Nueva Vizcaya, New Mexico, Coahuila, Texas in 1787. explains meaning of term gileno as one type of chiricagui. Gileno is also an umbrella term for mimbrenos and Apaches in western part of Nueva Vizcaya. Gilenos cited as worst enemies, feared by Spanish and indians alike. Progress toward indian pacification is reported. Describes how mescalero nation was ordered by capitancillos to move to Santa Rosa. With mescalero peace in Nueva Vizcaya established, emphasis on pacification shifts to Coahuila. Military maneuvers described. Spanish use both indians and Spanish for reconnaissance activities. Detailed description of bergara's, Cordero's and others' forces milpa destruction (corn, tobacco, frijoles, calabasa), rancheria assaults, killing of Apache guide by Volunteers. 1-14-1784 Approx. 50 Lipianes attacked Espalas and la Iguana by wounded, 2 women taken, buildings burned. Simultaneously other group attacked from west, Coahuyla stealing mules and escaping though pursued. Indian attacks compromising province mining, ranching; more troops needed. Crespo advised of troop need consistent with Cueto's assessment, possibly 3 militia companies. Military rolls-payroll for compania presidaria and the compania de Caballeria for January, February, March, April, promotions, vacancies, leaves, desertions, arrests, deaths. (J. Recommendation to Cuellar to direct military operations to Coahuila, to cover frontiers of Sonora and to fight in province of Gila. Statement of Cuellar's distrust of Indians, and of reduction to be achieved through weapons. Governor of Coahuila speaks as representative of viceroy; mention of composition of military companies to fight for Nueva Vizcaya and of Francisco Cuellar's military history. Copy of correspondence between Cuellar and captain of San Buenaventura concerning discussion of threats made by Indian enemies and military tactics for their reduction; emphasis on importance of exterminating them. Cuellar's diary of happenings in expedition at his charge terrain, of military organization, of encounter with Indians, war tactics, endurance of soldiers and auxiliaries, provisions, injured and dead soldiers and Indians, description of difficulties encountered in clashes with Indians, mention of Indian spies and information given by them, information of other military officials doings. Summary
Documents concern an all out military campaign and very well organized raid against Nortenos and Apache Indians. Indian prisoners of the Spaniards play an important role in attacks against the Indian rancherias. Diaries of the campaign give full description of how raids were carried out. Military official in charge of the expedition requests stipends for Indian guides who proved loyal to the Spaniards. Document contains some unrelated information dealing with mission's supplies and military appointments. Brief mention of Indian language interpreters. (M. Marroquin, August 1988)

Summary
Virrey acknowledges receipt of Munoz's letter re: campaign executed against indios fronterizos; virrey will order captain of Janos to render military assistance to Munoz in times of special need. Included is testimonio de auditor general de Indian attack on supply train en route to Julimes in which soldiers, arrieros killed (09-24-'63). Virrey acknowledges Christoval (03-26-'63). Auditor de guerra approves repartimiento of Indians captured in military campaign (04-30-'63). Military roster for Junta de los Rios. Includes name, length of service, ethnicity, etc. of presidio officers, soldiers, plus record of military campaigns, Indians captured, killed, catholicized, or remitted to Chihuahua or virreinato. Munoz notes that mulatos, mestizos, coyotes are suited to soldiering at presidios por estar estos hechos al trabajo, y acostumbrados a mantenerse . . . con los bastimentos ordinarios que ofrece el pais . . . (12-13-'63). Virrey orders Munoz to follow Cuellar's orders (04-25-'68). Re: viceregal order that presidio officers be payed cash wages (07-13-'68). Summary
Documents report Apaches killed Pimas near Tucson, taking captives and horses; Apaches exchange captives in Corodeguachi, one of them a sargeant who reports of future raids by Apaches. Soldiers attack Apaches killing several. Apaches attack merchant near Cananea destroying mining tools, and they also steal horses in reveicu; Apaches kill friendly Indians in Bac, and killed other people in Cumpas. Seris and Pimas kill people in Santa Barbara, Sauce, and in Pitic they kill friendly Indians. Troops dispatched to Buenavista and San Joseph to protect area. Soldiers attack Seris and Pimas in Sauce killing several Indians. Pineda states soldiers are in continous movements but since there are so many places where the Indians come from, impossible to search for all of them. (J. Tapia, may, 1988)
