Summary
Salazar's account of Garza Falcon's successful campaign against rebel Indians in Coahuila. Gives account of pursuit, battle and subsequent peace made with renegades. Following is Garza Falcon's letter to viceroy explaining terms of peace imposed on Indians. Also, viceroy's request that letter of thanks be sent to governor for a well-executed expedition. (J. H. Towns need be established to support troops in presidios in order to counter Indian hostility; areas sought with water, farmland and nearby woodland; line of frontier towns proposed for depopulated Conchos regions; 200 people of 41 families established; some irrigation undertaken, but lack of rain caused poor harvests; re-establishment at Pilar de Conchos advised for ease of reconstruction of dam and plentiful irrigable land; notice of establishment of population received; includes unrelated claim by Apache Indian (Manuel) concerning civil case; repetitive and superficial. Summary
Concern expressed by Moreno that housing expensive and food short as it is eaten by horses; Mendinueta recommends seed be made available at low price so soldiers do not desert; Wall of cavalry quarters in ruins, soldiers uncomfortable, horses damaged; discussion of (high) price of corn in region; price for corn gone from four to nine pesos per carga because of lack of rain; desertions continue as troops unhappy; soldier in Hospital incurring costs; haciendas asked for grain; baker stops making bread for regimento for lack of wheat; 25,000 pesos already given over from real Caxa of Durango; request that either horses be moved out to pastures away from the city, or 500 fanegas of corn be made available so corn is left for people in city; request for virrey to support Coronel in forcing Hacendados to keep prices low; testimony of Hacendados concerning their (lack of) grain; argument between Moreno and virrey concerning establishment of blame for shortages; certification that corn once selling for 4 pesos per carga now selling for 12 to 15 pesos per carga; lack of housing seen as resulting from increased number of shops; request for 12,000 to 14,000 pesos from real hacienda; Hacendado records the augmentation of 50 on his ranch because of lack of rain in other areas; bishop points out danger of leaving horses on haciendas outside city because of wild Indians; regimento is packed up for Querataro; royal decree that regimento retreat from Durango; regimento withdrawn from Durango for lack of grain; very repetitive; many copies. Series of documents concerning Manuel quimpers illness and his need to transfer to Guadalajara for treatment. Includes some minor discussion of climate in the Nootka establishment and the voyage of the Frigata Aranzazu. Certificates from doctors in Guadalajara giving detailed description of Quimper's herpetic disease for which he requires a dry, temperate climate for recuperation. Correspondence concerning Quimper's pay and his request to return to Spain because the climate in San Blas does not agree with him. Letters concerning the misconduct of Nunez (clerk). He threatened to burn down home. Doctors prognosis stating Nunez suffering from delirium which resulted from the climate. Interrogatives of witnesses. Nunez fired and arrested due to murder accusation. (K. Mckaston, March 1990)

Putting a halt on supplies being shipped to quiscate while giving supply of tobacco and gunpowder to group of comanches and tacahuanes preparing for battle against lipanes; virrey reminds munoz that within his province are people secretly collaborating with lipanes and urges discovery of these individuals; comanches offer to contain Apache incursions in exchange for right to settle near the Rio Grande, tahuacanes, tancahueses, and tahuayases make similar proposal in regards to lipanes; diary of daily events concerning lipanes by trevino - goes out in search of lipanes rancherias finds some abondoned settlements that evidence recent fighting (horse killed with arrow), enlists the help of taguayas(indian) in search for lipanes, finds out that lipanes have been informed of search by other spies who Spanish had been using, confrontation with lipanes with help of indians from the comanche nation and taguayazes who looted more than they fought; renewed commitment on the part of the comanches to fight against the Apaches; munoz cites linkages formed by marriages as principal reason why there are collaborators with lipanes; mentions Castro in regards to resettling of 400 comanches on the banks of the Rio Grande; report elaborating on a series of thefts and attacks committed by comanches in San Antonio and bahia del Espiritu Santo; lipanes send a 70 year old member of their nation to ask military to explain the new hostilities between the Spanish and his nation; Gomez killed and boy taken prisoner in indian attack; gives some numbers on recent thefts and attacks and who was sent out in search of indians responsible. Summary
Diarios de comision and instructions on mission matters written jurisdiction of Cosiguriachy (29), report filed by Rascon on missions of Batopilas and Moris, visits visitas of los Alamos, pachua and Pichachiqui and hears their sentiment on the resettlement of Indian families into their area - amenable to idea, Indians seek payment from rejos for work done he declares himself insolvent, mentions orders of Croix in which he terminates of all servitude imposed Indians since their conquest or reduccion in connection with the same process executed by the subdelegado de Batopilas, visits Papigochy mission appoints Indian Basilio Dominguez as teniente general, appoints Indian Sanchez to teniente general for Bachiniba, commissioned Ochoa to visita of said Pueblo, sum of money owed to population of Bachiniba they want it paid in goods and equitably distributed among the heads of each family with some left aside for community use, sum is from the fondo de temporalidades, Ochoa arrives from Bachiniba reports 33 families, Pueblo could successfully hold 15-20 more families due to opportunities provided by fertile land and abundant water, appoints Indian Lorenzo as teniente general of Pueblo Matachic and adjoining pueblos tejelocachic and Cocomorachic, appoints as general of all pueblos of Cosiguriachy the Indian Lagarda; instructions to be followed by Ochoa in mission under his security measures during visitas, census taking, proper arming of mission Indians, exemptions, edicts on travel, change of domicile, surplus seed sales, work without pay, punishment of Indians, postal service, religious and occupational application of Indians, elderly of Pueblo, servitude, rule of two days of community work for Indians of misiones Guadalupanas, hearing complaints, Indian appointments, reporting of Apache incidents, Indian fugitives from missions and livestock stolen. Reyes trujillo returning after expedition against manta prieta with indian aid ojos Colorados, an indian attack against San Juan bauptista, group of six Apaches being followed by group of indians from Conchos, Apache indian attack in which two men were killed, primera compania Volante kills one Apache and recaptures livestock stolen, troops that escorted Ugarte y Loyola, communication from subdelegado de cosiguariachy advising Borica that in that jurisdiction forcing indians to work in the mines would be prohibited, gets a request from governors of satevo, yoquivo, and guapdaynas that they have their own religious administration because current system of using priests of Batopilas is unsatisfactory due to distances involved, Borica responds by sending letter stating he will look into the matter when he visits these areas and also sends copies of decrees on matters relating to the treatment of indians in missions; letter concerning the matter of indians working as servants in homes of hacendados without pay and prohibitions and circumstances that have led to these developments; letter discussing the points made by Lopez muato on mission and civil authority over indians in missions, what permission indians need in order to leave the pueblos, what kinds of punishments are to be applied to indians who miss mass purposely, policy on alcoholism and delinquency mentioned during religious service, regulations on travel restrictions on indians; travel diary from 2-27-1791 thru 3-13-1791; indian called tomas his history of escape and recapture, last instance of capture was at hands of indians of piedras bolas; travel diary from 3-14-1791 thru 3-28-1791, apprehension of prisoners banda, palacios, Castaneda, gertrudi. Case against them was not proven and key witnesses roman and Acosta did not arrive for judicial proceeding, robberies committed by Juan Joseph conde; punishment of vizcarra for being lazy; meets with rouset de Jesus discussed indian complaints from missions, refers to recommendations made, Tapia requesting indian escorts and his disatisfaction with service provided, ochoa, Jose manuel takes statements from tecoricy and tonachic after their apprehension, visit to pueblo of satebo discontinues practice of cura using weekly workers, semneros in mission without pay; named teniente general for satevo, joya, and baponoyaba; in the latter, wives of prisoners seeking their release and it becomes apparent that without their husbands they have no way of surviving except for charity of the people in their pueblos; meets with anna maria, widow of indian Miguel Mariano, who seeks return of livestock confiscated from husband at time of arrest, he died in jail with daughter.
