Lipanes that include corn and salt; attempted meeting between sas and commandante general will not occur until sas receives word on lipanes in San Antonio; aga informs military that sas is not authorized to accept or reject peace that is responsibility of canoso and he is currently occupied with war against other nations; another obstacle to peace is the accusation by lipanes that ugalde aided comanches against lipanes; lipanes request gunpowder; munoz states that he has gotten cooperation from lipanes and seeks nava's cooperation in supplying indians with some of the goods requested, possible French involvement in the intertribal wars among indians; letter informing that munoz has come to an agreement with lipanes de arriba and has sent emissaries from this last group to persuade the lipanes de Abajo to comply by resettling where they previously were - the other side of Arroyo del atascoso; has authorized the use of force (aided by Spanish supplies) to compel lipanes de Abajo to accept peace treaty, also mentions possible use of comanches to do the same is another option; talks of some of the military obstacles that May be encountered in forcing lipanes; meeting held with sias and others with translators explaining peace treaty and their acceptance of the same. Reyes trujillo returning after expedition against manta prieta with indian aid ojos Colorados, an indian attack against San Juan bauptista, group of six Apaches being followed by group of indians from Conchos, Apache indian attack in which two men were killed, primera compania Volante kills one Apache and recaptures livestock stolen, troops that escorted Ugarte y Loyola, communication from subdelegado de cosiguariachy advising Borica that in that jurisdiction forcing indians to work in the mines would be prohibited, gets a request from governors of satevo, yoquivo, and guapdaynas that they have their own religious administration because current system of using priests of Batopilas is unsatisfactory due to distances involved, Borica responds by sending letter stating he will look into the matter when he visits these areas and also sends copies of decrees on matters relating to the treatment of indians in missions; letter concerning the matter of indians working as servants in homes of hacendados without pay and prohibitions and circumstances that have led to these developments; letter discussing the points made by Lopez muato on mission and civil authority over indians in missions, what permission indians need in order to leave the pueblos, what kinds of punishments are to be applied to indians who miss mass purposely, policy on alcoholism and delinquency mentioned during religious service, regulations on travel restrictions on indians; travel diary from 2-27-1791 thru 3-13-1791; indian called tomas his history of escape and recapture, last instance of capture was at hands of indians of piedras bolas; travel diary from 3-14-1791 thru 3-28-1791, apprehension of prisoners banda, palacios, Castaneda, gertrudi. Case against them was not proven and key witnesses roman and Acosta did not arrive for judicial proceeding, robberies committed by Juan Joseph conde; punishment of vizcarra for being lazy; meets with rouset de Jesus discussed indian complaints from missions, refers to recommendations made, Tapia requesting indian escorts and his disatisfaction with service provided, ochoa, Jose manuel takes statements from tecoricy and tonachic after their apprehension, visit to pueblo of satebo discontinues practice of cura using weekly workers, semneros in mission without pay; named teniente general for satevo, joya, and baponoyaba; in the latter, wives of prisoners seeking their release and it becomes apparent that without their husbands they have no way of surviving except for charity of the people in their pueblos; meets with anna maria, widow of indian Miguel Mariano, who seeks return of livestock confiscated from husband at time of arrest, he died in jail with daughter. It was found that Rios calvillos, who Ran Jaumave before Yanes took over, had used bad judgment in buying corn badly needed to aid Villas of San Carlos and San Nicolas de la Croix. Summary
Discusses settling of Indian groups in Nuevo Santander; review of locations and Indians in each area. Need for greater defence of missions. In order to reduce Indians, need to dominate Indians through punishment, and food distribution. Discussion of seeds and cattle for food production and surplus need to keep accounts of agricultural production and livestock; also tells whether rainfall or irrigation agriculture practiced and future possibilities. Indians described as deserters and apostates who are causing damage in northern provinces. Mention of frey Rodriguez' request for mission. Description of ethnic groups and population of rancherias, their water source and suggestion of moving Indians to three new settlements between Padilla and Guemes or take advantage of irrigation. (L. Summary
Receipt of testimonies regarding Serrano request for mission in San Carlos and location of possible construction. Mention of friendly Indians who sell fruit and deer skins and return the horses they find. Chosen location does not have enough water for present cultivation, suggestion and advantages for cattle and rainfall agriculture of location near Gabia. Indians of Rancheria Tira la Piedra accused of robbing travelers and Mule drivers, inspite of large corn production. Sketch with key shows area where proposed mission of Horcasitas to be located. Discussion of availability of water, wood, agricultural possibilities, area promises good harvests, free from hostile frontier Indians. Testimonies of inhabitants as to fertility of land and rainfall for corn production. Fray Lopez outlines lands to be included in mission for Palalhueques. Provides numbers of vecinos in surrounding parages and amount of land owned and how exploited. 148,000 pesos for tools and equipment.
