Lengthy case concerning shooting death of soldier Christobal Carabajal by soldier Juan Chirinos occurring in mid-day before many witnesses. Governor directs collection of testimony and has captain Rafael Martinez Pacheco handle defense of Chirinos. The two were old enemies and the case is sent to Mexico, where Chirinos is found innocent, as act seen as self defense. (R. Davis) (1979)

Summary
Suite involves the murder of two men. The killers were an Indian, a Coco, and a soldier. The reason was the soldier was having an affair with the wife of the now dead layman. The priest was killed because he was not liked. This fact is born out by the testimony of one murderer the Indian, who gives the names of many soldiers wishing to kill the priests. Summary
Neve's letters to Peru, 1783 concerning frontier military affairs. Tells Peru that even though he is comandante de la primera division, capitan Martinez is to lead Apache campaign, because Janos presidio under seige from Gila Apaches- Gila Apaches seeking revenge for murder of their leader Francisquillo and other Gandules, imprisonment of Pachateju. Relays Croix's instructions to mount continuous guerrilla against Apaches in their own territory. Orders Peru to embargo Bacadeguachi missionary Martinez' goods and investigate his sale of barrels to Janos presidio. Orders Peru to join forces with San Buenaventura presidio to mount Apache campaign of 50-60 men while Indians estan en las mescaleras (letter written October 10, 1783; pp.29-32). Tells Peru to have Opatas from Bavispe escort herd of cattle to Arispe. Orders Peru to return Joseph Antonio Olivar, soldier accused of Murdering his wife, to asylum in church. (testimony of various individuals concerning case taken by Peru included here). Argues that murder of 2 Janos soldiers by Apaches could have been prevented if Peru took more precautions. States that these (December 17, 1783; pp.59-60) months best time to attack Apaches, because they won't be able to build fires to roast Mescal. Peru told to take no prisoners no Se embaracen a haser Prezas, ninguna estan Buena como la que queda en el Campo traiendo Sus Orejas, que no nececitan Custodia ni ofrecen gastos (pg.60). Informs Munoz to proceed with steadiness, caution and to tell Apaches peace will be accepted only under following conditions- 1) Apaches surrender all prisoners; 2) return all stolen livestock; 3) break off communication with enemies of crown; 4) allow all future Apaches accused of stealing livestock or killing espanol, mestizo, Castizo o mulato to be punished by Spanish authorities. If such conditions met, peaceful Apaches will receive protection from enemies and missionaries, if they want them. If not, they will be left to vivir a su modo. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Summary
Virrey's auto includes text of Bustillo y Zevallo's letter to him from Adaes presidio (11/26/1731). In response to viceregal order to move adae presidio because of Rivera's recommendations, Bustillo y Zevallos states that place Rivera picked is a swamp, and that no other location is suitable. In response to viceregal order prohibiting trade with French, Bustillo y Zevallos complies but warns that Adaes needs to trade for foodstuffs with French fort at Nachites to survive. Bustillo y Zevallos also notes that Apaches stole 70 Head of livestock, killed 2 soldiers at San Antonio presidio. States he sent 16 soldiers from Adaes, with Indian auxiliaries, to help French defend Nachites against attack by Nache Indians.
