Testimonies and writs against defendent Baltasar Rodarte who is accused of attempted homicide of Philipe Moraga (blind) and of his wife, Sebastiana, whom he believed had an affair with Moraga. On 3 aug, 1697 Nicolas Ramires, accused of stealing 4 sheep and killing an Indian, sentenced to 2 months of service in N public works; to pay Joseph Antonio Hernandes for the sheep; and fined 20 pesos plus court costs. On 10 March 1698, Ramires was re-sentenced for misbehavior to 3 yrs more in public works, with irons on his feet. (R. Saba) (1980)

A set of questions are put to an Indian, Francisco Tempano concerning the deaths of some priests and other Spaniards. He testifies that he and other Indians killed the Spaniards and priests. There is then some confusion about the congregation of other Indians along with the Spanish this is cleared up. (John Zilboorg) (1980)

Luis Granillo questions an Indian prisoner concerning the murder of fray Francisco de Jesus. The Indian, Luis conixu, is from the Pueblo of San Diego de los Xemes. It seems that the Indian captain of war killed the Father, shot him as he stood in the doorway of a church. Another Indian was killed because it was stated that he had been a friend of the Spanish. This is the complete testimony made by Don Pedro Fages and sent to comander de Croix, of the Indian uprising along the Colorado River which resulted in the deaths of the two missionaries, fr. Juan Diaz and fr. Joseph Mathias Moreno. Although not the original, it is a faithful copy signed by Pedro Fages himself at Monte rey. (microfilm catalog)
