Approval for a chaplain for Terrenate. Diaries sent to viceroy on expedition to Rio Colorado and Gila; new Indians are found; prisoners are taken; tobacco is requested to deter soldiers from desertion. Letter from Croix requesting two thousand more troops to be able to pacify provincias. Croix deduces need of this many men from accounts of problems in provinces; from documents from presidio personnel and governors of provinces, also from letters written by civilians living in area. Varied correspondence between Sierragorda and virrey regarding administrative matters, orders received, announcements from virrey, and freedom conceded to various prisoners; ff. 331-335 involve Lafuente soliciting retirement due to mortal illness, described as erpeo espejinoso (vmo?) Zalado ofarfurceo; women referred to as quejas de Rosalia baldez are mentioned (f.336) and arrival of some women with Antonio (f. 350); freedom to prisoners held for murder (ff. 340-347); ff. 350-352 refer to border pacification and peace with Lipanes; little significant data throughout. Lengthy legal case mainly consisting of sworn testimonies of numerous witnesses and involved parties in murder of Jose Contreras at presidio of Altamira by Manuel Cristoval Guzman. Documents include a statement or confession by Guzman who initially took asylum in church to avoid apprehension, later Guzman claimed protection under the Fuero militar. Guzman finally sentenced to five years public service in the presidios of Nuevo Santander. (G. Lavalley, may 1987)

Two anonymous letters of accusation against contador and tesorero of San Blas precipitate Series of inquiries by virrey and Eliza to ascertain nature and validity of accusations; accusations include vice of gambling and drinking, withholding debts from salary, illicit sales of supplies designated for use of marineria.
