Instead, diary recounts activities from depredations committed by enemy Indians, problems with horses, means of livelihood, battles with Indians, routine military activities, and pursuit of specific Indian perpetrators. Alderete writes diary recounting activities of troops under his command at Santa Rosa presidio from July 14 - December 31, 1767. Details administration and organization of presidial troops, their routine activities, actions against Apaches, Indian activities, and mail service. Letter concerning military appointments, problems with Apaches, and military actions. Alderete certifies that he informed troops of viceroy's letter about salaries. Cancio reports on state of affairs and activities at Santa Rosa presidio. Discusses problems with weapons and their inadequacy in battle, problems with enlistments and quality of soldiers, and charges against Rabago made by Alderete. Uniform and weapon supply list of items requested from Mexico (f.130). Cancio provides detailed report on review he made of conditions of troops, weapons, fighting ability, number of horses, uniforms and other supplies (ff. 131-132). In other letters reports on number of soldiers from presidio assigned to nearby places and missions, and notes difficulty in getting reports to viceroy due to distance. Ff. 138-139 contains letters from Cancio about his trip to Santa Rosa written at real de Charcas and Saltillo. Discusses condition of roads, Weather, and number of days until he reaches destination. Some notes from on his trip, his reports back on situation at presidio, and Indian activities in area of presidio. Ff. 249-260 and ff. 267-271 deal with problems in construction of (new keel for) launch for paquebot San Carlos (toison) and building of additional paquebot for navy. Ff. 279-281 discuss arrival of ship-building tools from Spain and expert technicians from Veracruz. Difficulties in scheduling itineraries and supplying missions and presidios in California due to shortage of ships. Ff. 264-266 request by Hijosa and approval by viceroy for monthly amount of his salary to be sent to assist his wife.
