Summary
Corbalan's letter to Croix describes silver mining areas and discoveries of gold and silver and control of gold. Cornelio depopulated because of lack of water though rich in gold. Soldiers of Altar find gold in Aguas Frias. Aid of rations to compania de fusileros, but need to avoid expenses; transport costs, baker must be paid by compania; lack of uniforms complained of. Transport of troops by ship and details on carrying water; describes poor maritime transport service on pacific coast. Letter confirms completion of expedition; discusses availability of rations on ship for infantry. Yaquis don't grow food and need rations. Document presents daily account of troop movement and locations and activities of Indians in area. Ordered to enter from south, began exploration of area. Found underpopulated Rancheria. Provides description of area where Indians washed and collected water. Found other rancherias with extreme hunger due to limited squash and other vegetables to provide nutrients needed for the work and extensive walking done by Indians. At one Rancheria, Indian guard yells warning of advancing troops causing Indians and horses to flee. Describes bloody wars to take property from Indians outside San Marcos. says conditions calm in Iglesias. As troops arrived in new places they were named and reported to conde. Series of documents relating Indian depredations. Detailed description of mutilation of Spaniard's corpses by Indians including genital mutilation, stripping, gutting and stuffing with beans, excessive lancing, and Head smashing. Reports Indian theft, killing of animals and burnings. Mentions corn as dietary staple; hunger, economic hardship caused by slack trade from Indian threat. Mentions Indians' wasteful killing of animals, closing of mines, village desertion. Cites bravery of woman who shot Indians in self-defense.
