Documents discuss general campaign of 1787-1788. Virrey lists Echeagaray's tactical maneuvers in Sonora, and the preparation of three partidas for campaigning. Ugarte y Loyola writes of kidnapping and assaults on Mule trains by Apaches and Taraumaras. Mentions limited animal recovery success of quarta compania volante. Reports little action in California and New Mexico. Commends Cordero;s attack on Indian settlement in which Cordero's men murder, steal horses, take prisoners and burn homes. Reports troops of villasecusa, Mata Binolas and Fato in Sonora, relates inclusion of Pimas in military force. Reports Villaescusa's attack on Apache Rancheria. Summary
Discussion of detachment of troops made up of troops from Adaes and Orcoquiza due to fear of return of enemy nations. Viceroy orders movement of presidio to Orcoquiza, 2 padres and soldiers remain in Orcoquiza. Desire to repopulate Ranchos, but distance between Ranchos makes defence difficult, suggestion to plant Ranchos with vecinos together under protection of detachment. Rebuilding of Cuerpo de Guardia, houses, prison. Excesses committed by Indians in Bahia and environs under Thobar thus need of troops from Orcoquiza, Adaes, San Sabas, and friendly Indians to punish barbaros. Plea for Ripperda to keep harmony with thobarand's other captains. Soldiers involved in Bahia road building, protecting entrances, Ranchos. Reports of death of Indians and soldiers. Complaints of Indian spying in missions, lack of troops, and horse and oxen theft. Fort establishment. Desire for missionization of coastal Indians. Report of Mal de Lengua disease. Viceroy (?) Governor of Coahuila speaks as representative of viceroy; mention of composition of military companies to fight for Nueva Vizcaya and of Francisco Cuellar's military history. Copy of correspondence between Cuellar and captain of San Buenaventura concerning discussion of threats made by Indian enemies and military tactics for their reduction; emphasis on importance of exterminating them. Documents concern meeting by Nayarit Indians in home of Valdes y Gamboa in which plans were made to March to Mexico City to demand audience with viceroy for removal of Spanish troops and missionaries and restoration of losses incurred by conquest of Nayarit. Concerns military problems caused by a force of rebels made up of Apostate Indians and renegades menacing Valle de San Bartholome; includes many interesting details on rebels use of spies; size and organization of their forces (more than 1700 men); ethnic composition and origins of members of their group; their leader (Calaxtrin);their tactics and strategy; their capture and conversion of other Tarahumar Indians, including women; their arms and equipment; importance of criminals in the group; their use of Peyote to persuade captives to join rebellion; rebel bases in mountains; their use of captured livestock for meat; their commerce with barbarian Indians for arrows and hides; use of auxiliaries against rebels; population losses resulting from rebel raids; an exploration of rebels home in San Francisco mountains by balenzeula; recent presidio transfers and resulting strategic situation; recognition that rebel Tarahumaras are a serious threat to province; and viceroy's insistence on importance of new presidio line.
