Juan Bautista de Ureta, under orders of the conde de Monterrey, questions various persons returning from New Mexico regarding the state of the province and the governorship of D. Juan de Onate. Witnesses - P. Francisco Valverde y Mercado, Marcelo de Espinoza, bachiller xines de Herrera Hortal, Juan de Ortega. Questions regard the disposition of the native peoples, their dress, food, and agriculture, minerals in the province, the native religion, the number of Spaniards, livestock, the assigning of encomiendas, the state of conversions. Summary
Letter is a brief but useful report on religious activities in durago and north. The governor asks for a bishop to be appointed because of the large numbers of new converts. Interesting remarks on the need to force non-tributary paying Indians to help fund religious activities. Pacification is gradually spreading. Summary
A letter which reports to the king Coronado's actions and the state of affairs in Nueva Galicia and further north. He speaks of the lack of christianization of the Indians and the rebellious spirit which prevails among them. Special mention is made of the residents of San Miguel, who wish to move to a district in which they will be closer to a number of Indians, as is their present location the Indians are reluctant to serve them, the Spaniards being so far from their homes. Documents concerning establishment of new presidio, reestablishment of missions abandoned by Franciscans because of lack of military protection, in junta de los Rios area. Mineral riches as well as souls of converted Indians notes as reasons for resettlement, as well as more efficient communication/transportation between Nueva Vizcaya, Coahuila. Lengthy description of major settlements, presidial system of northern frontier provinces. New presidio to have 50 soldiers- 20 from San Bartholome presidio; 15 each from Cerrogordo and Conchos. Major document by marques de Altamira (Mexico, 6/14/1747) detailing proposals (pp.87-110). Also includes diario y derrotero of expedition itself, written by gobernador Rabago y Teran (Monclova, 1/23/1748), noting Flora, fauna, geography, Mineral wealth, Indian groups, water sources, pasturage, etc. (pp.115-46).
