Summary
Neve's letters to Peru, 1783 concerning frontier military affairs. Tells Peru that even though he is comandante de la primera division, capitan Martinez is to lead Apache campaign, because Janos presidio under seige from Gila Apaches- Gila Apaches seeking revenge for murder of their leader Francisquillo and other Gandules, imprisonment of Pachateju. Relays Croix's instructions to mount continuous guerrilla against Apaches in their own territory. Orders Peru to embargo Bacadeguachi missionary Martinez' goods and investigate his sale of barrels to Janos presidio. Orders Peru to join forces with San Buenaventura presidio to mount Apache campaign of 50-60 men while Indians estan en las mescaleras (letter written October 10, 1783; pp.29-32). Tells Peru to have Opatas from Bavispe escort herd of cattle to Arispe. Orders Peru to return Joseph Antonio Olivar, soldier accused of Murdering his wife, to asylum in church. (testimony of various individuals concerning case taken by Peru included here). Argues that murder of 2 Janos soldiers by Apaches could have been prevented if Peru took more precautions. States that these (December 17, 1783; pp.59-60) months best time to attack Apaches, because they won't be able to build fires to roast Mescal. Peru told to take no prisoners no Se embaracen a haser Prezas, ninguna estan Buena como la que queda en el Campo traiendo Sus Orejas, que no nececitan Custodia ni ofrecen gastos (pg.60). Notes that Janos presidio killed about 23 Indians, took 3 prisoners among Indians ostensibly seeking peace and warns Peru to beware Indian vengeance. Details proposed campaign against Apache under Vildosola, involving presidial soldiers from Santa Cruz, vecinos from Fronteras, Opatas from Bavispe. Croix's letters to Peru concerning presidial affairs in 1782, including transfer of Apache prisoners from Janos to Obraje of enchinillas, stationing of detachment of 25 soldiers in Valle de San Buenaventura to protect inhabitants, proposed attack on Rancheria of sangrietto Apache leader Francisquillo, Apache attack on Cucurpe led by Joseph Maria Gonzalez, stolen from same village as Young Boy, more than 300 Apaches attacked Cucurpe June 6, 1781, leaving 53 dead, including Gonzales' Father Eugenio, capturing 44. Gonzales known as Cayetano among Apaches, also stole horseherd of Santa Cruz presidio. Rubio's instructions concerning Gileno Apache peace proposals. Informs Munoz to proceed with steadiness, caution and to tell Apaches peace will be accepted only under following conditions- 1) Apaches surrender all prisoners; 2) return all stolen livestock; 3) break off communication with enemies of crown; 4) allow all future Apaches accused of stealing livestock or killing espanol, mestizo, Castizo o mulato to be punished by Spanish authorities. If such conditions met, peaceful Apaches will receive protection from enemies and missionaries, if they want them. If not, they will be left to vivir a su modo. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Summary
Rubio's detailed instructions for sustained campaign against various Apache groups. Nueva Vizcaya presidial forces divided into primera and segunda divisiones. Primera division commanded by capitan Peru, included Carrizal, Janos, San Eleceario, San Buenaventura presidios. Segunda division, led by capitan Martinez, consisted of Rio del Norte, San Carlos, Cerrogordo presidios. Each division to campaign against Apaches in their own territory on alternating months while rear guards, other division protected frontier. Pp.25- 28 (may 28, 1777) Rubio's reflections on nature of warfare, what makes a good soldier, vile character of Indian enemies, etc. Includes chart showing number of troops, men at arms at each presidio.
