Documents concerning Ramon's punitive expedition against rebel Indians in Coahuila, founding of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de Tlaxcala, and other issues. Cuerbo de Valdes mentions death of 5 soldiers in aforementioned campaign, distribution of captive women and children to participating soldiers; requests supplies of arms and powder. Also included is fiscal's comments and suggestions, decisions of junta general concerning Coahuilan affairs which threatens hacenderos with fines should they be found guilty of mistreating Indians. Rodriguez Gallardo's deposition and remarks to informe written by visitor of Jesuit missions in Sonora. Issues discussed include consolidation of dispersed pueblos de indios; military escort for religious entradas into frontier areas; definition of indios vagantes; reasons for Pueblo desertion. Cites various articles from recopilacion de Leyes de las indias concerning reduction of Indians to mission life. author suggests that 2,000 pesos be sent to governor of Sinaloa to combat Apaches and that Barrancas of Sierra Madre be cleared of small Tarahumaran rancherias, and Indians gathered to be settled in larger pueblos. Also discussed are issues of election of Indian civic officials, regional officials to oversee Indian communities, Indian labor at missions, and punishment of mission Indians. Included is definition of siembras de comunidad versus siembras de Iglesia; number of Indians needed for a Pueblo to be legally recognized. Summary
Series of documents dealing with military campaigns against Apache Indians; summary of Indian activities and hostilities against the Spaniards; military operations against Indians resulted in the recovery of horses, cattle and the capture of Indians who were taken prisoners and cut their ears off, some Indians were decapitated; chart in this document condenses outcome of military actions against Indians (number of prisoners, combat casualties, Indians killed and animals recovered); military operation is organized and leaves in pursuit of Indian leader who escaped from coachi; letter is sent to the viceroy giving notice of Apache leader being resettled in presidio of Tupson. Summary
Documents concerning resettlement (exile) of Lipanes once peace is conceded. Describes subsistence of Apaches in natural state vs. After they're placed on reservations (word not used, but is closest to what seems to be implied). Lipanes to be moved to area without mountains so they can't hide, with very little to forage so they will be dependent on Spanish rations. Mentions Borica Marching Lipanes to Norte presidio. F.396-400 are conditions of peace/surrender, details rations, rules for Lipanes. (A. Dean, October 1989)
