Summary
Documents deal with verbal attack of Ugalde on Sanches Navarro. Eyewitness testimonies of this event are included. Mention of Ugalde's bad attitude and criticisms toward the church. Sanches accused of being lazy, a hidden merchant, etc. Ugalde prohibits transfer of grains, cattle, and horses belonging to church out of province without his permission. Serna responds to virrey's order commenting on several points regarding Indian campaigns and relations, promising completion of each. says Indians use mostly bow and arrow. Description of their construction and use. Concerns Indians' method of attack. says need more money for hatchets and other tools for opening paths. Company also in need of priest and surgeon to maintain soldiers' minds and bodies. Serna informs Castro of capture of desertors. Serna requests permission to search for doctor to cure continuing illness. Guerra appointed captain of company. Includes letter regarding desertors and requesting instructions for action against them. Also contains letter from priest saying Serna has not presented himself for confession and seems unable to. Concerns several campaigns and Diaz duty to have troops armed and mounted to be dispatched on receipt of orders. Includes introductions to monthly reports on developments and conditions of company. Diaz requests licenses for soldiers being discharged. Diaz acknowledges receipt of royal order to be placed in province archives concerning salaries of governors coming from or returning to Spain. Relates visit of conde to Laredo during which command and 914 pesos were turned over to him. Concerns passing of command to Echeagaray. Zerna neglected to submit to him archive of Superior orders. Includes list of necessary items for administering sacraments. Diaz' illness delays March. Conde instructs Diaz regarding peaceful relations with Lipanes and punishments for treacherous Indians. Descriptions and outcomes of several campaigns. Letters acknowledge receipt and completion of orders. Includes introductions to monthly reports on developments and conditions of company. Contains drawing of barracks to be built upon approval. Diaz says has 42 Morillos of willow if lumber can't be supplied. Requests permission to reward 3 soldiers for Superior service. Contains certified count of ears and genitals presented to Castro. Five Indians from Sax' Rancheria caught, one killed with help of friendly Indians. Mules and property of these Indians seized and sent with Rodriguez to Castro. Diaz writes conde thanking him for leaving him in charge of political and military matters during his absence. Describes mission to Aguaverde. Perez says company doesnot have necessary items to administer holy sacraments. Requests funds for candles and wine. Reports three soldiers incapable of completing service. Concerns transfer of Indian prisoner. Concerns 16 pacified Indians in Palmas. Arocha requests transfer to Texas. Diaz receives notice of large influx of Indians to Bejar, responds by sending 60 men. Relates incident in which Indians stole 6 horses, fled when horses were retrieved and returned to Flores' ranch killing two people and burning the huts, corrals and horses within. (M. Lacomba writes Castro to confirm return of Ten soldiers to company as instructed. Relates status of company and company finances. Indicates need for money and horses. Requests instructions regarding transportation of company supplies and treatment of Lipanes. Concerns an order by Castro passed on to captain in Rio Grande allowing them to purchase supplies not available in Nuevo Santander and requests departure date for said mission. Later document explains that not enough available soldiers to begin trip on date sent by conde. Asks Castro to settle dispute with Cayetano regarding 34 mules chartered for mission. Acknowledges receipt of orders for company discipline. Bustamente recognized as captain of company upon arrival in Laredo. Passed on orders to him. (M. Dannemiller, September 1988)

Summary
Series of eleven letters from Lacumba to Ugalde that cover: the disciplinary problem with Elozua, correspondence missing in transit, the logistics of a food shipment, the transmitting of troops, the unsatisfactory status of his troops, explains the delay in handing over two captured Indians and the intervention of Fray Gonzales, the request to fill two sergeanto vacancies, acknowledgement of the receipt of military instructions, and a letter and a relacion discussing the status of 10 soldiers in need of retirement for reasons of age, health, and disciplinary problems.
