Correspondence between Salcedo and viceroy concerning rebel encampments along U.s.side of Sabinas River. Includes daily log by Toro of March along Texas coast searching for rebel meeting places. Testimony by local resident indicates that rebel bands have settled near Nacogdoches and mouth of Nechas River. Also includes precautions taken in Texas in light of reports from vice-consul in new Orleans of imminent pirate attacks against coastal settlements, with possible connections with rebels. (A. Summary
Vaamonde recounts loyal service history as justification for appointment to new position, as unemployment has left him in state of poverty. Includes short account of defense of canary islands from British, construction of fort at San Blas, and disciplining of batallion of Spanish and Indian auxiliaries stationed at San Blas. On page beginning with siguiendo aquello de apeles (folios unnumbered), detailed account of torture ritual and cannibalism practiced by unnamed group of Indians in Nuevo Leon. Spanish victims kidnapped from area around Sayula are tied to stake and burned with branding irons while dance called mitote is performed. Skull cap of victim is removed, and dead bodies are eaten. Vaamonde's campaign against these Indians is recounted, as well as quelling of uprising in 1783 of escaped prisoners, headed by notorious pirate Lorencillo, in Guadalajara. Vaamonde seeks position as governor of Nuevo Santander, intendente of San Luis Potosi, or sargento mayor de Mexico. (A. Tukey, January 1989).

Summary
Investigating rumor Indian unrest, led expedition more than 20 arcabuseros to Yaqui pueblos, but unable to enter because River to high (7/26/1689). States all Yaqui pueblos peaceful. With help Yaqui captain general Juan Andres, organized 400 Indians to pursue Gentiles who stole captain Bega's livestock, killed two muleskinners, but expedition delayed because of presence pirate (Cosario) in mouth Yaqui River. States Yaquis harvested much maize this year, selling large quantities to miners. Believes theft/killing cattle blamed on Yaquis work of some thieves. Describes Yaqui houses, churches of Adobe as sumptuous. Mentions Estancia de Agua Caliente, 12-14 leagues from Yaqui pueblos, as having much grando mayor. States other pueblos territory peaceful as well. says he knows nothing Rio Mayo, Tegueco settlements. (T.
