Summary
Letter from Barragan, comandante de Cuerpo de Cavalleria de frontera, requests Gracia of use of military standards and insignia as reward for company's brave and loyal service. Barragan provides excellent geographic, demographic, and economic portrait of towns of Valles, maiz, and Rioverde. Military companies and campaigns against Indians mentioned. F. 223 mentions the extinguishing of part of Chichimeco population. Process of pacification said to be impeded by the vastness of the territory and scarce population upon it. Ff. 223-224 speaks of vasallos americanos and their superiority en los Ramos de industria y agricultura F. 224 speaks of Villa de Valles, its social organization, quantity of haciendas and ranches, occupations of inhabitants, pacification of Chichimecos, and taxes and tribute. F. 225 mentions Valle de maiz, its military settlers intent solely on destroying Indians, and the granting of land grants to these settlers. F. 225 deals with Rioverde, the pacification of the Chichimecos, their incorporation into life of San Luis Potosi. Mixed Spanish, Indian, and caste population of town mentioned and the number and income of its missions. Reasons for establishment of military companies, their size and quality stated. An annual contribution of 4 pesos by each indian family; that indians form their own parishes and pay indian and Spanish religious personnel, lists suggested salaries for various personnel; that they pay 30 Spanish residents (who must be married and will populate area) to serve as defense militia; that a system of community livestock be developed (provides prices of various species); that each indian own land and pay a percentage to the church; and that funds be set aside for the king, for hospitals, and to support livestock raising. Nunez writes of Galvez' merits. Description with map of rio Mayo area, including description of clothing worn by indians, and agricultural activities. Estimates a population of 2,000 indian families living in the rio Mayo area (maybe 6,000 souls). (L. L. Woodward, August 1989)

Summary
Population census from San Ildephonso de la Cieneguilla carried out by governor Crespo in 1774-1775. It consists of a list of men, women, and children. An estimation of the number of Hiaqui and Pima Indians is also given. Tueros requests Bucareli not move him from Cieneguillas to el Pitic. Informes from Michelena, Maitorena, and Bergana to Crespo concerning the condition of commerce in los Placeres. All of them emphasize that the condition of production of los Placeres decreases from may to October because the Indians go to the hills and the Spaniards engage in agriculture tasks. Includes a report from Crespo dealing with the mine, commerce, population and agricultural conditions of los Placeres. (R. Gomez, November 1989)

Bauptista de Anza notifies Bucareli about defense strategies adopted in order to defend provincias de Sonora against the attacks of Indian Seris and Apaches. Lumbreras notifies Bucareli of discovery of silver mines next to presidio de San Carlos, at Sierra de San Marcial. Lumbreras suggests Bucareli to erect a new town -real de San marical- at the site. Includes a very simple map of the town to be erected. Includes a description of the site as well as the number of mines, the number of workers to be employed for the mines, and an estimation of the amount and quality of silver expected. (R. Appointment of priest to cure families, itinerary of trip. Also, lists of expenses incurred in transportation from Veracruz to San Antonio. Maps with planned areas in which such families could settle near San Antonio without conflicting with other settlers in area drawn by marquez de Aguayo in ff. 187.
