Summary
The cedula concerns the establishment of two presidios in Durango to protect the silver shipments coming from Parral. There follows several autos, informes sent to the king, telling of the need for such a step. A brief, very brief, glance at the document indicates valuable information on society, both Spanish and Indian, in this area. Should be reread in depth. Philip III orders Don Pedro de Acuna, governor and captain general of the Philippines, to assist Sebastian Viscaino who has been ordered to settle the harbor of Monterey. The importance of this document lies in its account by Philip III of the expedition on which Sebastian Viscaino, an experienced navigator, discovered Monterey and explored the coast in between on order of Don Luis de Velasco, Former viceroy of New Spain - description of native inhabitants of the coast and their mention of gold.
