Summary
Fray Cavallero sends 80 Head of lettuce to Manrrique, with respects to his wife, who is quite partial to vegetables. His garden did not do so well this year, explains the fray, because of late frosts in April, may and even in June. The grapes also have not ripened satisfactorily; but the melons should turn out fine. The fray requests two peines of cheese, to be sent with the Porter. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)

Very useful analysis of conditions of Nueva California with details as to funds and costs to be incurred by military and include - economic benefits and improvements in cattle raising, improvements in agriculture techniques and crops grown. Role of missionaries and changes due to and since Jesuit expulsion. Provisions to be supplied to Indians, settlers, military and missionaries; militia formation; housing and choosing community leaders; required annual inspection of establishments; work habits, recreation and rewards to combat idleness. Salt supply and transportation. Appeal to be made to viceroy to enforce law should clergy refuse to oppose regulations. Relocation of include - establishment of towns, workshops, mills with suggestions on where to locate, what to produce, what to teach Indians. Military service for residents of Nueva California. Use of whale sperm and fat. Shipbuilding. Development and taxes. Investments and profits. Accounting procedures for agriculturalists and religious. Military, religious, Naval salaries. Includes 4 expedientes, 15-18; 17 and 18 related. Numero 15 concerns battle between Piquete of soldiers and Camotero Indians; soldiers attempt to capture Camoteros, who resist with bow and arrow, killing 2 horses and a soldier; soldiers kill 2 Indians; find 2 Canoas, which governor decides they should keep, as soldiers need to cross River often; fiscal reminds governor that one-quarter of value of confiscated goods owed; governor responds saying Canoas do not appear Indian-made, besides are not serviceable, believes they are from shipwrecked 'san Judas Fadeo', wine and aguardiente also found, but governor argues it is weak and of little value. In 16, Bocio, widow of late governor, requests monthly pension of 20 reales; matter discussed among fiscales, approved. Numero 17 includes accounts of expenditures incurred while transporting Collera of Meco Indians to Mexico City; money from various sources; terms of some money lent discussed among fiscales. In 18, Lasaga notes that expenditures approved originally by predecessor, but that he too will approve them. (L. Kerr, June 1989)
