Summary
Letters concerning reduction of Chichimec under the doctrine of San Juan Baptista Xichu; attempts to confine them to one Pueblo by Castilla y Llata; taking a census of the Indians and looking for Indians in hiding. Correspondence about meeting with Pames and Xichu rancherias suggesting that force and coersion was not a good way to reduce Indians. The three mission have Approx. 100 families each with mixed marriages among mulatos, Indians and Mecas. Ffs.140 and 145 include 1792 census of individuals and families from each mission. Rationale for forming one Pueblo is good soil for planting maiz and grazing, and temperate climate. Mention of Indians paying tribute and those not yet converted living together peacefully. Series of reports that confirm death of Indian prisoner, Cristobal Martin and the insubordination of the Pame Indians in general. (S. Tisdale, March 1990)
