The case of capitan Baltasar de Ontiberos is carried to the Audiencia at Durango. The capitan gives an account of his long service in the wars of pacification against the Jijimes, Tepeguanes, Tobosos, Conchos, and Tarahumares - as well as his Side of the story in the criminal proceedings against him. He asks the new governor to, in effect, revoke the sentence by returning his hacienda and other property in receivership to him. (C. Needham) (1975)

The charge, filed by a merchant, involves an old debt of the unfortunate capitan, a charge of violent seisure of a Bar of silver, poor administration of justice - and ultimately the residencia. In this Series of documents Senor Pereira contracts a debt to Senor Gonzalez de Valdez in may of 1648. By August 11, 1648 Senor Gonzalez is suing for repayment, specifically requesting 600 ^fanegas^ of salt from Pereira's salt mine (in Culiacan?). The justicia, Juan Fernandez de Carrion, grants this and payment is noted in a document dated January 26 1649. A long, wordy, repetitious - and bitterly contested - estate settlement which contains considerable information regarding legal procedures, imprisonment for debt, slavery, social relations, etc. The highly complicated settlement involves officials of the province, the Audiencia, and even appeals to the king. Possibly an important document in which the author provides many reasons why a repartimiento of Indians to work in the mines would benefit both the area under consideration and the real.
