IN 1817 HE WAS EVALUATED AS A LESS THAN AVERAGE OFFICER. IN AUGUST OF 1837 HE LED A REVOLT IN NEW MEXICO AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT OF ALBINO PEREZ. PEREZ WAS KILLED AND CABALLERO TOOK HIS PLACE. HE IN TURN, WAS DEFEATED AT POJUAQUE IN 1838.
