Summary
Certain sum of money from the paz y guerra account was being spent on maintaining prisoners of war in 1789 at same time that the account was being clarified; claim by Nava that Cortes had failed to count costs of maintaining prisoners of war that continued in 1789 when he was reconciling paz y guerra account for Bahia, asking for those funds to be returned to Bahia; letter from Monterrey inquiring as to why the real tribunal y audencia has taken so long in finishing work on the documentation relative to the paz y guerra accounts for Texas and Coahuila; real tribunal requests that Nava prepare report on costs made to this account for the year 1788; Gondra writes that delay in processing account due to death of Cabo-Franco and sickness of Medina, to the costs mentioned by Nava earlier is added gifts to Lipanes, gives progress made so far on these accounts for several areas, goes into the history of the account in terms of its establishment and motives (covered in detail in expediente 3 of this reel), attests that no mention is made on documents that he is examining prisoner and gift costs; issue is explained by Gondra by pointing to the date of incurred costs and timing of examination of the accounts, cites verification by means of written proof of costs as way to resolve this issue; letter from real tribunal informing virrey that after examining the paz y guerra account the 368 pesos that Nava held were still in the account for Bahia are not there; orders to communicate this information to Nava allowing him opportunity to submit proof in order to substantiate his earlier claim. Unsuccessful campaign against Piatos. However, Vildosola attacks Suaquis, killing 12 men, 4 women, taking 14 prisoners. Superior fire power of Spaniards took field. Later 30 Suaquis with families- 83 people- surrendered, reduced to Velem, antigua Morada de esta nazion. Pimas Altos, described as mas obstinados of rebels, ask for pardon. 14 more Seris and families surrender, bringing total to 191 persons. 4 more families asking pardon. Very few rebel Seris left. 3 Tiburones ask pardon and that their nation be allowed to remain on Island. Spaniards agree as long as several of their leaders come to make peace. No Seris left on Tiburon mas que tal qual que esta Casado y aliado con familias del Pais. Seris state Vipisi and Pima followers joining Cueras in Sierra de las Espuelas and offer to lead Spaniards to them. Guided by Chrisanto and 2 other Seris, Bergosa and 60 soldiers pursue Pimas, who flee into mountains. 4 rebels, 3 women, 3 children killed, 6 captured. Horses recovered. Topics include; 1) Papago unrest; 2) proposed invasion of Tiburon; 3) Pineda's poor health, 4) Pima-sibubapa hostilities in Ostimuri; 4) military personnel changes; 5) general state of Elizondo expedition. Letter dated June 18 relates surrender of 14 Seris, bringing total to 191. Tiburones ask pardon and to be allowed to stay on their Island. Pardon granted with understanding that entire nation pasaria a cuchillo if they committed any hostilities. Pimas under Vipisi go to Sierra de las Espuelas to join Cueras. Seris offer to lead Spaniards to them. In following fight, 4 men, 3 women, 3 children killed, 1 woman, 9 children captured. Rest of Pima rebels escape. (T. Sheridan) (1980)
