Series letters between Bonavia and virrey concerning arrival in Chihuahua of Jose Antonio Montes, an Gileno Indian, soliciting position as comandante of Gilenos at any frontier presidio. It is finally determined that Montes and his two women companions are runaways from their Spanish adoptive families. Includes interesting account of Montes' prior work history in service of Spanish. Summary
De Anza writes viceroy general letter relating his reasons for accepting and describing in general terms both expeditions to California and reminds viceroy of his wanting to open route between New Mexico and California thru Sonora. de Anza also describes to viceroy happiness of Palma and his three followers when they are confirmed in cathedral serving as godfather governor of area and three mayors. Viceroy issues monies to de Anza to cover trip of Yumas to Mexico and back to Colorado River. Viceroy communicates to de Anza an eddict given to him by Galvez about king personally giving thanks to Anza for expeditions and his appointment by king as governor of New Mexico. Anza thanks viceroy and sends him as present a piece of petrified wood found in creek in Arizpe. (A. Dell'acqua, January 1988)

Letters trying to clear wages for promotions with treasury. Intendente of Sonora has bought meat for rations for Apaches in reduccion, mention of other foods, treasury upset at cost. (A. Anza, 80 soldiers, 4 Seri guides led by Chrisanto search for rebels. Capture Pima woman, who tells them a Rancheria of Seris, Sibubapas camped in mountain canyon. At least 4 Seris killed. Rest flee to nearby Bosque, escaping troops por su mayor agilidad a Pie. Marcos, hidden in espesura, tells Chrisanto he's going to kill him for guiding Spaniards. Summary
Rodriguez Gallardo's deposition and remarks to informe written by visitor of Jesuit missions in Sonora. Issues discussed include consolidation of dispersed pueblos de indios; military escort for religious entradas into frontier areas; definition of indios vagantes; reasons for Pueblo desertion. Cites various articles from recopilacion de Leyes de las indias concerning reduction of Indians to mission life. author suggests that 2,000 pesos be sent to governor of Sinaloa to combat Apaches and that Barrancas of Sierra Madre be cleared of small Tarahumaran rancherias, and Indians gathered to be settled in larger pueblos. Also discussed are issues of election of Indian civic officials, regional officials to oversee Indian communities, Indian labor at missions, and punishment of mission Indians. Included is definition of siembras de comunidad versus siembras de Iglesia; number of Indians needed for a Pueblo to be legally recognized. Copies. quadernos that deal with Apache lipanes, correspondence of Castro and nava, indians seeking refuge in mission, and in general are presented for the purpose of justifying an increase in troop strength; letter recording attacks by lipanes on livestock; account of how indians and military of area were organized and proceeded to recover livestock and horses stolen by lipanes in valle de Santa Rosa; investigation by lozaya on Apache attacks in san Buenaventura, reports of indian sightings near sandina hacienda; Castro explaining that if his troop strength is not increased he will be forced to seek help of comanches and he is loathe to do that because of inherent difficulties; letter discussing request of increase in troop strength and justifications for same. Summary
Diarios de comision and instructions on mission matters written jurisdiction of Cosiguriachy (29), report filed by Rascon on missions of Batopilas and Moris, visits visitas of los Alamos, pachua and Pichachiqui and hears their sentiment on the resettlement of Indian families into their area - amenable to idea, Indians seek payment from rejos for work done he declares himself insolvent, mentions orders of Croix in which he terminates of all servitude imposed Indians since their conquest or reduccion in connection with the same process executed by the subdelegado de Batopilas, visits Papigochy mission appoints Indian Basilio Dominguez as teniente general, appoints Indian Sanchez to teniente general for Bachiniba, commissioned Ochoa to visita of said Pueblo, sum of money owed to population of Bachiniba they want it paid in goods and equitably distributed among the heads of each family with some left aside for community use, sum is from the fondo de temporalidades, Ochoa arrives from Bachiniba reports 33 families, Pueblo could successfully hold 15-20 more families due to opportunities provided by fertile land and abundant water, appoints Indian Lorenzo as teniente general of Pueblo Matachic and adjoining pueblos tejelocachic and Cocomorachic, appoints as general of all pueblos of Cosiguriachy the Indian Lagarda; instructions to be followed by Ochoa in mission under his security measures during visitas, census taking, proper arming of mission Indians, exemptions, edicts on travel, change of domicile, surplus seed sales, work without pay, punishment of Indians, postal service, religious and occupational application of Indians, elderly of Pueblo, servitude, rule of two days of community work for Indians of misiones Guadalupanas, hearing complaints, Indian appointments, reporting of Apache incidents, Indian fugitives from missions and livestock stolen.
