Nuevo Santander. June 22, 1782-December 7, 1784. 30p. (Approx) Consulta, instancias. Originals, copies, signed, unsigned.
Summary
Includes 3 unrelated expedientes, numeros 19-21. Numero 19 concerns attack by Meco Indians on Rancheria Martinez; Serrada recounts ordeal, telling of horses killed by arrows or stolen; he has taken several Indians prisoner, awaits word on punishment or place of imprisonment; told to send those guilty of previous crimes to Havana, others to Castillo Ulua; Galves outlines plan for sending adult Indians to Castillo to learn Christian doctrine and to prevent further 'deserciones'; other Indians 'remitidos' to various Villas, possibly to help in tobacco harvest. In 20, Serna regrets that he is unable to assume appointment as 'teniente' in company of Nuevo Leon due to health and other factors. In 21, comerciante Fernandez outlines glorious potential of maritime trade between Veracruz and Nuevo Santander, arguing that salt, plomo, Carne, Lana, other necessary goods could be more easily and cost efficiently traded by sea than land, if government tax and other policies were to encourage, not discourage, maritime entrepreneurs; fiscales promptly denounce Fernandez's 'representacion,' stating that 'no tiene Cosa substancial.' Santander. June 24, 1780 - October 6, 1781. 80p. Letters, autos. Signed.
Summary
Documents concern the breaking of peace by the Indians, their banditry and assorted killings. Interrogation of witnesses concerning knowledge of the Indians, of their breaking of the peace, and their crimes is given. F. 189 contains a list of the four points asked of each witnesses. 12 witnesses' responses to these questions follow with accounts of Indian attacks, their stealing of horses, and killing of various soldiers. One soldier killed at Pasaje de Noche Buena, for example. Other documents concern the groupings of various Indian tribes (mesquites, Mulas, and other nations) in order to assault the Villa of Padilla. A description of the persecution of these wayward Indians by the Spaniards is given. Last, there is an account of how the Indians should be brought into mission life and given to agriculture. It is said that under previous peace treaties, the Indians had been brought into the missions, had been given instruction in the planting of maize Frijoles and other agricultural pursuits and had been pacified and converted to christianity. This is the goal again, now that this peace has been broken by these Indians. (P. Lenz, September 1989)
