Antonio Maria, an Apache from las Cuevas, is apprehended in minas Nuevas for suspicious behavior, and on suspicion that he's spying for enemy Indians. He claims he's a Tarahumara, but has no traveling papers. Testimony includes observations of Apache camps with stolen livestock (and some description of herding technology) and large herd of horses. Summary
Virrey marques de Casafuerte orders gobernador Carvajal to send 50 presidial soldiers from Nueva Vizcaya to Coaguila to punish Indians raiding that province Carvajal convenes junta de Guerra, where the Indian enemies each presidio has to contend with are described, and manpower shortages noted. The junta tells the virrey the Nueva Vizcaya presidios are undermanned and have no soldiers to spare. Carvajal then asks Alcalde mayores of Inde, Nazas and Santiago Papasquiaro jurisdictiones if they can send men, and they also reply negatively. Carvajal estimates 70,000 Indians in Sonora alone, many of them hostile. Corodeguachi noted as residence of Sonora's compania volante. Carvajal also mentions that blame for Saltillo raid affixed to Cocoyome, Acoclame, Coaguileno Indians deported by gobernador Alday. Excellent description frontier military problems. (T. Summary
Documents concerning Coaguileno, Cabesa, Cocoyome Indians (24 Gandules) who escaped from a Collera (chain gang) deporting Indians from el Pasaje presidio to Mexico City and raided, murdered on their way back to their home territory around Parras in Coaguila. Chain gang never reached Mexico City, Indians escaped at Paraje de Cuesta Blanca de Barrera and several made their way to Volcan de Orisaba. Many escapees killed along the way. Includes interrogation of Diego de la Cruz Pacheco, Coaguileno and one of the escapees, now imprisoned in Parral. (T. Summary
Visitador general Gregorio Alvarez Tunon y Quiros inspects Pasaje presidio, receiving a roster of 40 soldiers, their arms and mounts, from presidial capitan Joseph de Alday, who also answers a formal interrogation concerning state of presidio. Capitan Alday informs him that although Pasaje has 50 plazas, or soldiers, 5 sent to Mapimi presidio and 5 to Gallo presidio. Visitador general also notes capitan Alday's preparations to deport 300 Indian prisoners, rebeldes, to Mexico City. Formal interrogation administered to other officers of Pasaje presidio as well. Desertion of one soldier, Marcos Lopez, noted. Reduction of horse herd due to many campaigns against rebel Indians previous year. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Summary
Preparations for campaign against hostile Cocoyome, Coaguileno Indians involving forces from Mapimi, Gallo, Cerrogordo, Conchos presidios, Tepeguan and Tlascalteco Indian auxiliaries, and vecinos from Spanish communities. Campaign rosters included. Some prisoners taken and interrogated, including Cocoyome leader Juan de Lomas. Lomas blames Coaguilenos for all the robberies and murders. Frequent references to the imprisonment of Coaguileno community of Cinco Senores Pueblo. Alday recommends prisoners be deported to Mexico. Good summary document by Alday 0489a-0492b.
