Discusses state of Sonoran missions, describing Former abuses of Jesuits, stating that, los pueblos de las missions... Estan formados y dispuestos contra toda politica racional, y sociedad civil. notes Indian hostilities, especially severe in upper San Miguel, Sonora drainages. Claims hostilities responsible for depopulation of prosperous mining community of Saracache north of Cucurpe. Discusses abuses of Indian land by Spaniards and their livestock, stating that Indian in Cucurpe who beat animal eating his crops sentenced to 50 lashes. Notes spread of disease (viruelas, Sarampion) to gentile Indians of Rios Gila and Colorado. Discusses Garces' entradas to Rio Colorado. Proposes plans for new Indian reducciones, arguing that communal labor must be enforced and Indians must not be allowed to live without guidance of civil-religious authorities. Summary
Excellent letter concerning vicious personal feud between padres Ortiz and Garcia. Ortiz accused Garcia of treating Indians too harshly, working them so hard they didn't have time to cultivate their own Milpas, beating them for the slightest infractions. Yaqui leaders corroborate Ortiz' charges. According to una coyota in Torim, Garcia beat the temastian so brutally he died 6 months later. Garcia accuses Ortiz of attacking him between Torim and Bacum and of being and of being a drunk. Arriola believes Ortiz is insane. Both missionaries use Yaquis to carry out feud. (T. Sheridan) (1979)

Basically two documents; the first from the Jesuit Father provincial outlines all the negative effects Indian depravations have had on missions in Sonora and in general on the Spanish Colonial effort. Then beginning in the margins of the provincials letter and extending two pages beyond are comments and recommendations by the auditor general concerning crown efforts- mainly through the presidial strategy to stem the Indian menace. Summary
Instructs priests Yaqui area to- 1) ask for suspension if Yaqui chiefs return from Mexico City with order from viceroy to restore their staffs of office, because such order must be confirmed by Audiencia of Guadalajara; 2) use arms of church to prevent Yaqui chiefs from taking possession staffs of office if requests for suspension denied. Believes such action necessary or Yaqui, Mayo areas, entire province Sonora will be lost, christian flock torn to pieces by carniceros lobos. Mentions misery, sad state Yaquis. Exhorts priests to use power excommunication cautiously, to find out what order Yaqui chiefs carry says first. Warns if respect for religion lost, Spain will experience civil wars like France, Germany. Clear indications profound civil/religious conflict. (T. Sheridan) (1976)
