Summary
Continuation of correspondence with gobernador of Nuevo Santander. Includes account of Indian attack against Villa San Juan involving many deaths and theft of livestock and furniture. Brutality of attack prompts execution of Indians captured during raid, and orders by Rubio to immediately punish Indians in the field if caught raiding Spanish settlements. Protocol for monthly inspection of troops issued by Rubio, with long Series of replies from military commanders of each guarnicion following. Also includes tables of troop strength at various Villas in Nuevo Santander. Concludes with correspondence concerning the naming of Gonzalez Santianes as new gobernador. (A. Tukey, August 1989)

Series of correspondence to Gobernador Escandon: tables of numbers of troops stationed at towns and missions of Nuevo Santander; notes ship carrying aguardiente run aground near port of Tampico; notes trip of virrey to Coautitlan; death of Amarillas and appointment of Caxigal de la Vega as new virrey; undetailed accounts of attacks by Xanambres and Taumaves against towns in Sierra Tamaulipas and internment of prisoners from these raids at Queretaro; undetailed accounts of celebrations at various villas in Nuevo Santander of coronation of new Spanish king, including dances, plays, mass, bullfights, loas (?), reenactment of battles between Christians and Moors, moxigangas (?), and music. Also includes letter from Escandon to virrey concerning cattle and corn harvests, notes cases of theft from Pisones by Xanambres and general state of poor relations between these tribes, migration of Apaches into northern part of colonia, and abundance of unspecified minerals in Sierra Tamaulipas. Summary
Repetitive Series of letters from gobernadores of Nuevo Santander concerning routine administrative and military affairs. Includes documents concerning naming of Gonzalez Santianes to replace Ruvio as gobernador of Nuevo Santander. Should be given fabrica de iglesias and enforcement of payment of Diezmos, greater efforts towards converting Indians, need to treat Indians kindly and only punish in fair proportion to crimes committed. Includes repetitous Series of reports of horse theft by Indians against towns in Sierra Tamaulipas. Series of correspondences between comandancia interina de Nuevo Santander and virrey; in absence of sierragorde, Serna is named comandante Interino; documents primarily concern indios Martines fleeing from mission for the sixth time, reason unknown; Serna resolves to punish them and requests permission from virrey to gather men for expedition; F. 412 is table of men joining to punish Martines, all this in fear that Indians plan to advance on mission and ranches, Blanco is leader of expedition; Blanco falls ill and cannot carry out expedition, seeks curandero without luck, can not Ride to Monterrey to See doctor; illness classified as mortal, he names Vidal to take his place as leader; other document embedded in middle (f. 414) concerns permission sought for military wedding; very interesting documents. Summary
Request to governor by viceroy to transfer Pedro Jose and his band to Acordada prison in Mexico for trial. Governor insists in questioning and trying prisoners in Monterrey, viceroy orders presence of prisoners. Copy of diary about depredations and murders by Indians attached to documents. Diary written in 1786 by Alcalde mayor de Linares. Prisoners deny confessing to governor about murders also deny ever admitting them to official. Confusing set of documents follow as all documents of interrogation dated 1796, and death certificates of prisoners dated 1795. Viceroy and fiscal demand clarification as seventh prisoner appears when there were only six. Defending lawyer does good work but prisoners die in prison. Viceroy sends seventh to Castillo Juan de Ulua for 10 years, after sentence to live away from home as a free man. Viceroy requests prisoner be treated kindly. (A. Dell'acqua, September 1987)
