Summary
Folder 1 contains autos informing gov. Parilla of the situation in the Pimeria Alta, and his responses. Also includes many frantic letters from the region describing attacks, deaths, etc., including one from padre Estiger notifying of the deaths of padres Tello and Ruen. Also includes the governor's field correspondence as he traveled from Horcasitas to Opodepe, Nacameri, Tuape, and Cucurpe. Folder 2- informe by Sedelmayr, Estiger and Nentuig to Parilla about the beginnings of the revolt (this contains much good information). Informe by the citizens of Opodepe. Ococoy is sent to talk to Luis, and returns with a report that includes Lusi movements and rationale for starting the revolt. Parilla's field notes and correspondence from San Ignacio, including- Romero's informe on the Valley of Aribaca and Tubac; Tagle's informe on Soanca, Guevavi and Cocospera; notice of citizens armed and gathered at Terrenate; notice of the arrival of capitan de Carpio at San Luis from Terrenate with 43 soldiers. Unable to conduct formal investigation, but states only reason unrest from 1735-40, mistreatment Yaquis by missionaries Gonzalez, Napoli. Granted permission to Muni, Bernabe to plead Yaqui case before viceroy. In 1738. When leaders failed to return after 1 1/2 years, Napoli told relatives 2 men hanged Mexico City, sold church valuables Rahum, Potam. Also states another cause rebellion severe floods Rios Mayo, Yaqui, which washed away land as well as crops, causing much hunger. Claims fr. Estrada didn't want Spaniards living near his Indian pueblos, so he incited to burn Spaniards corrals, etc. Describes widespread missionary opposition to civil authority. Discusses raids pueblos, churches Fuerte Valley; aid sent by southern Sinaloa settlements. Describes shortages provisions, funds province, personal finances, due to expenses pacification Indians ysla de California (California still an Island 1740). Notes relief expected from Nueva Vizcaya under Ydoyaga, from Janos under Carpio. Describes ambush vecinos Echojoa in Santa Cruz. States Indian rebels control 30 pueblos, including most along Lower Rios Yaqui, Mayo, Fuerte; that mines Sicurijoa, Alamos, Baroyeca, Rio Chico, Potrero, Ventana abandoned, that commerce/ communication with Sonora impossible; that over 185 leagues held by rebels, that at least 12-14,000 Indians in revolt. Describes several unsuccessful campaigns against them, including capture 30 citizens Villa de Sinaloa, captured in supposedly loyal Pueblo Santa Cruz de Mayo, beaten, turned loose nude on foot. says Sinaloan forces inadequate to contain the sedition.
