Summary
Cuerbo y Valdes answers Garaycochea's letter about rescue of Picuries held captive by Apaches which was requested by their cazique Lorenzo. Governor questions two natives of Moqui about access to carry out rescue of such captives. Governor orders christianized Indians to help in defense of their own lives and properties against rebels. Autos pertaining to various happenings, from the appearance of a man on a queso de Sibola (See ff.56-61), to lack of enough missionaries to man doctrinas and missions in province, and why Picuries should be rescued from Apaches. Autos, petitions from Ayagues and Carizos to fiscal de naturales requesting transfer and ownership of land, appointment of Jose Cayetano Salinas as their protector. Travel and incarceration of six Ayagues in Mexico City. Petition granted but not acted upon, Ayagues travel second time to Mexico City to repetition. Petition granted again but blocked by governor who claims that land belongs to Milicianos and that Salinas is an undesirable and criminal who is put in jail. Tobacco, gunpowder, and land finances listed along with expenditures and troop payments, appointments made in civil offices of governor and justicia. Activities at missions described: crop production, establishment of new orders, rebuilding of destroyed mission, failure of priests to report profits and subsequent conflicts with royal officials, and distribution of mission supplies.
