Documents explain type of abuses such as making people pay for extra soldiers needed for military campaigns and the use of abusive language against local dwellers; animals and money were also taken away by commander. Written with caustic wit, considerable intelligence, literary style, and flawless handwriting. Footnoted digressions make up one-third of document. Letter from Armendariz (mayor) to Amezgueta, beseeching him for lenience in punishing his son, Armendariz (Menor) for an undisclosed crime . He cites Amezgueta himself, through his earlier involvement with the family, as character witness. Inserted into document is part of a letter from Armendariz-son to his Father, lamenting his imprisonment and impending doom. Page is apparently tearstained. (A. Dean, January 1989)

Gonzalez Santianes defends himself against accusations of failing been a long history of Indian hostilities in the area dating long before his command. Contends that Indians in area have been reduced, but that they continually engage in robberies against missions because missionaries often renig on promises of payment for labor services, and otherwise mistreat Indians. Contends that frequency and level of raids under his administration have been exagerrated, and that all such acts have been adequately responded to with military force. (A. Tukey, July 1989)

Concerns autos -trial- followed against Murgier and Puga. The documents mention Indians assassination, and misappropriation of funds as cause for Murgier and Puga's judicial trial. Five Indians in jail at Pueblo de Croix ask Calleja for their liberty. The Indians were put in jail by Murgier without reason, according to Calleja. Notification of Vidal de Lorca's death. (R. Concerns Series of documents on the slaying of leaders of the Camotero Indians, by teniente Puga who was following orders from capitan Murgier. Several soldiers, Puga and Murgier are interrogated and gave details of how Indians were killed and beheaded. Defendors for Puga and Murgier appointed.
