Summary
Series of documents regarding Indian robberies in presidio of Tucson and other presidios and towns of the provincias del norte; letters reporting on the recovery of animals stolen by Indians, confrontation between Indians and soldiers left a number of casualties on both sides; raids against Indians in rancherias of Bigotes, Cuernoverde and Bermejo; letter giving some details such as Indians of Nueva Mexico are behaving. Negotiations with Indians held in order to convince them to work in Spanish communities and presidios; letter discribing the natural distrust of Indians when they are offered work with Spaniards; raid against Indians results in some being killed and others taken prisoners; statistical chart summarizing actions against Indians in provincias del Norte. Summary
Concerns Series of documents dealing with military reports from presidios of Provincias Internas. This documents consists of diaries and detailed data on the military status of the various presidios under the administration of the corresponding commanders. Charts contain match of military campaigns with number of military officials, soldiers, equipment, and supplies along with footnotes giving additional explanation of arms and ammunition making, military events and novedades. Diaries of daily novedades that occurred in presidios are women kidnapped by soldier; desertions; horses, weapons ammunition, needed in presidios; food supplies, prisoners, clothes, sick soldiers, chaplains, shooting practices, burials, hiring of soldiers etc. (M. Series of documents dealing with Indian and military Lipanes; peace treaty between Spaniards and Lipanes de Arriba (points of the treaty are included); campaigns against Lipanes de Abajo; capture of Indians who are giving up their weapons and surrender in the presidios; Indian women are taken prisoners; trade of weapons between Indian groups; alliance of Spaniards with subdued Indians; unconditional surrender of Indians who later are used in mission's agriculture; permits and passports given to Indian allies to negotiate with Indians rebels (Lipanes de Abajo); Indians express unhappiness due to extreme harassment by Spanish commander; Indian surrenders who had stabbed a military official. Campo advises viceroy of status of derecho de peage (toll rights) in department of San Blas. Tax on pack animals suspended. Reasons why reduction of toll to half a real will benefit mining and salt production, Mule drivers and militia, basing arguments on economic data of salt extraction and prices and conclusions of Galvez' visitas. Trebol Navarro is commissioned to transport some Venados (buras o alazanes-both terms interchanged throughout documents) to Spain for king; expediente deals primarily with costs of transport and feeding of deer, including hire of servants to aid Navarro in journey and caretaking of deer, and especially cost of return to Nueva Mexico upon accomplishing task; everyone reimbursing people for job with enough to both travel home and have money to present to families after over three years, absence; interesting Series of documents. Summary
Concerns Ugarte's claims that Ugalde has misused authority by making extraordinary requests of officers under Ugalde's command. Also, Ugarte says presence of Ugalde's troops endangers present peaceful relations with Indians. Ugalde moving troops to El Paso where Mescaleros are formalizing a peace request. Virrey says Ugalde was told to keep governor of Coahuila informed and asks Ugarte to advise him of situation. Includes several oficios regarding Ugalde's presence there and a copy of Rengel's letter to Ugarte regarding summons to El Paso by Ugalde. Includes copies of Ugalde's requests for troops and horses. says Ugalde never conferred with him. Contains Arzes' account of movement of troops and geographic description of area and water sources. Provides number of people, ranches and governing leaders of Comanches and other tribes in area. Describes activities of and campaigns against Indian tribes in area. Provides dates of peace agreements. says needs more military supplies. Provides information regarding military and Indian losses and locations and activities of troops on certain dates. Contains several documents concerning Ugalde's request for horses. Following virrey's request, Ugarte agrees to sell correspondence due to perceived intrusion by Ugalde. (M.
