Documents relating to events in transporting families from canary islands to settle in Texas, lists of materials in clothing and all kinds of tools needed. Lists of supplies of foods, salary to be paid to guide, increase of daily maintenance for every person, census of families with physical description of every individual in expedition, proposals by church to marry every girl from 12 to 18 years of age and every Boy from 24 to 12 years of age. Appointment of priest to cure families, itinerary of trip. Also, lists of expenses incurred in transportation from Veracruz to San Antonio. Maps with planned areas in which such families could settle near San Antonio without conflicting with other settlers in area drawn by marquez de Aguayo in ff. 187. A plan to scale and drawing of proposed Villa to be established in ff. 201 and orderly issuing of lands to be given to families for planting. (A. Dell'acqua, January 1988)

Summary
Mention of search for missionary for Bacoachi Apaches; still funding problem. Escalante has store of corn, wheat seed he plans to ration weekly to Apaches, but grain has weevils (gorgojo la palomilla), other insects in it; longer he stores it, more is wasted by pests, mildew. Problems distributing grain. Letter relating services Escalante has performed in management of Bacoachi Apaches; all duties as comisionado described in detail. Echeagaray, others certify that Escalante speaks Apache, is honest, well-qualified. (A. Dean, may, 1989)

Concerns financial problems faced by military, soldiers to receive money only for illness, 'salidas,' therefore requested that 'cigarros' be used as wages and valued as currency; further correspondence discussing details of scheme, reason for 'atraso en remision de situados', concerns over possible introduction of contraband 'cigarros,' risk thought to be small; discussion of financial plans for military, 'extractos generales' from various presidios not remitted for several years making financial assessment difficult, call for elimination of 'libranzas,' other costly military programs, reference to decretos passed by previous virreys concerning financial matters. Concern expressed by Moreno that housing expensive and food short as it is eaten by horses; Mendinueta recommends seed be made available at low price so soldiers do not desert; Wall of cavalry quarters in ruins, soldiers uncomfortable, horses damaged; discussion of (high) price of corn in region; price for corn gone from four to nine pesos per carga because of lack of rain; desertions continue as troops unhappy; soldier in Hospital incurring costs; haciendas asked for grain; baker stops making bread for regimento for lack of wheat; 25,000 pesos already given over from real Caxa of Durango; request that either horses be moved out to pastures away from the city, or 500 fanegas of corn be made available so corn is left for people in city; request for virrey to support Coronel in forcing Hacendados to keep prices low; testimony of Hacendados concerning their (lack of) grain; argument between Moreno and virrey concerning establishment of blame for shortages; certification that corn once selling for 4 pesos per carga now selling for 12 to 15 pesos per carga; lack of housing seen as resulting from increased number of shops; request for 12,000 to 14,000 pesos from real hacienda; Hacendado records the augmentation of 50 on his ranch because of lack of rain in other areas; bishop points out danger of leaving horses on haciendas outside city because of wild Indians; regimento is packed up for Querataro; royal decree that regimento retreat from Durango; regimento withdrawn from Durango for lack of grain; very repetitive; many copies. On indians and other ethnic groups changing place of residence unless they have the proper certification obtainable from the local judicial body or parrish, restrictions on travel in the frontier zones, restrictions on indians settling permanently on haciendas or ranches (only seasonal labor), travel papers needed for everyone except those working for certain ministries; penalties for violating these restrictions and instruction on dissemination of this information; rules to be effected in order to correct irregularities in supply of grain that specify methods of counting grain, the distribution of surpluses, pricing policies, prioritizing groups to receive the grain, the distribution of seeds and the dissemination of this information; the lack of proper record keeping of royal announcements and decrees, how this effects the continuity that should be present during changes in administrations and appointments, fines to be exacted on officials who are remiss in these matters, and the appointment of Borica to oversee the project to remedy the situation.
