This Series of documents concerns the execution of the will of captain Bartolome de Urbanela. The first few documents contain the widow Dona Ana's request for the will to be read and her claim made official. After a couple statements of character by men attesting to Dona Ana's relation to Bartolome the will is transcribed. Following it comes an inventory of capt Bartolome's hacienda San Jose and of his many ^estancias^ in the San Bartolome Valley. After leaving funds to establish a ^capellania^ Bartolome orders his debts paid and leaves the rest to his widow. In the inventory of the estate many Negro slaves are listed. The title of this document is somewhat misleading since the inquiry is not directed towards an investigation of the circumstances of death of Pedro Aracaval, a muleteer, was killed during an uprising of the Tarahumara Indians on June 14 of the preceeding year. He left Ten mules as an estate which are the subject of a dispute between a self-proclaimed creditor, a free mulato named salavador de Barrio Nuebo and the civil authorities. (C. Needham) (1975)

Beginning in August 11, 1648 Fernando requests of the justicia Juan Fernandez del Carrion, that he order Juan de Berdego to return a ^Casa^ and ^mesa de trucos^ to him, Juan presents his story in the next documents saying Fernando promised to pay so much for the Casa and billards table (or pool hall?) but never did so Juan is simply re-possessing his goods. The justicia finds in Juan's favor. Fernando is angry and writes to the king requesting an overturn of the justicia's decision but it comes to nothing. In the movement of events here Juan Dies, there is a copy of his testimonio and his widow Isabela actually sees the case to the end. This possibly important document, addressed to the king, concerns past abuses in the administration of estates in Nueva Viscaya. The document requests that, in conformity with past cedulas which extend into the 16th century, the Superior jurisdiction over the real be recognized as in the power of the presidente of the Audiencia at Guadalajara and his oidores and fiscales. Records of testaments and the administration of estates will be reviewed by a royal officer to See if criminal charges must be made. (C. Needham) (1975)

A sworn testament by the deceased giving very detailed instructions as to disposition of his estate. The document also includes a petition by an applicant seeking official recognition of his responsibility as guardian of the children of the deceased. Numerous documents follow which pertain to what must have been a very complicated settlement of the estate. (C. Needham) (1975)

A long, wordy, repetitious - and bitterly contested - estate settlement which contains considerable information regarding legal procedures, imprisonment for debt, slavery, social relations, etc. The highly complicated settlement involves officials of the province, the Audiencia, and even appeals to the king. Account books provide insight into economic, commercial, practices. Testimony is included from a large number of people interested in the case - family, debtors, creditors, and govt. Officials. (C.
