Documents concern compliance with royal order of April 11, 1799 commanding that all Apache prisoners of war be sent to la Havana to prevent escape and return to Chihuahua. Details of March from Chihuahua to Veracruz (See exp. 8), medical treatment for numerous sick. Recounts escape of two Apaches, later recaptured near Tucson. Main body of documents consist of death certificates for numerous casualties of tuberculosis among Indians awaiting transfer from Veracruz to la Havana. Also concerns appeals from administrators of Hospicio de pobres, where Indians are held for shipment out of Veracruz, to receive compensation from real hacienda for feeding, housing, and christianizing of Indians. Summary
Herrera rejects expense receipts that Loredo submits for escorting Indian chain-gang from Arispe via Guadalaxara to Mexico; Loredo contests validity of refusal with auditor de guerra's support; royal decree reveals even military petitions must be on official paper with the sello segundo which has Loredo redoing his expense receipts; Perez requests payment for his companies' services in escorting Loredo and prisoners from Guadalaxara to Mexico (Zapotlan); validity of this request is rejected on the grounds that the troop is in the service of his majesty the king and need not be paid extra; after Ten years of debate over the issue between the real hacienda, Loredo and the various viceroys, the king issues a royal decree stating that troops are to be paid 16 pesos for every 80 leagues covered. Three chain gangs sent from Guadalaxara to Mexico and costs expected to feed each adult and child; children may be given away for adoption to be educated and christianized; Loredo is in charge of gang that originated in Arispe consisting of escapees and he is to pick up more in Guadalaxara that are destined for Mexico City. expense records are to be kept to justify monies received in Guadalaxara for the real hacienda in Mexico. Summary
Letter from Concha to Ugarte y Loyola saying he has consigned friendly Indian nations to guarding less cooperative tribes to maintain peace, requests military try to leave all of them alone, keep Spanish Side of agreement. Other letters discuss meetings with various Indian leaders, violations of peace plan, means of enforcement. Detailed description of two Comanche campaigns on Sierra Blanca Apaches. Mention of seasonal habitation Yutas y Xicarillas. Mention that Apaches Gilenos on south Side of Rio Grande seem sincere in wish for peace, those on north Side have made two invasions since plan in effect. (A. Dean, March 1989)

Summary
Series of documents regarding Indian robberies in presidio of Tucson and other presidios and towns of the provincias del norte; letters reporting on the recovery of animals stolen by Indians, confrontation between Indians and soldiers left a number of casualties on both sides; raids against Indians in rancherias of Bigotes, Cuernoverde and Bermejo; letter giving some details such as Indians of Nueva Mexico are behaving. Negotiations with Indians held in order to convince them to work in Spanish communities and presidios; letter discribing the natural distrust of Indians when they are offered work with Spaniards; raid against Indians results in some being killed and others taken prisoners; statistical chart summarizing actions against Indians in provincias del Norte. Concerns conflict of authority between military officials; woman is kept in captivity; Indians complain of mistreatment by Munoz and ask for his removal so problems between Indians and Spaniards will stop; very detailed narration of Indians being killed by government troops who went in their pursuit, indio Tomas is interrogated under oath, he describes how Indians survived and attacked the Spaniards; Indian prisoner gives account of how Indians planned attack against Spaniards, some Indian nations colluded to attack Spaniards in conjunction and trade items among themselves; report on Indian child being interrogated by Spaniard (text of the interrogation is included); diaries of the pursuit of Indians is sent to the viceroy, chart about the final result of the campaign is included here, chart shows number of Indians and soldiers who were killed in combat, ammunition, weapons used, horses, mules etc.; governor certifies the public exhibition of genitals and limbs of Indians killed in combat during campaign; letter is sent to the viceroy praising heroic action of captain Bustamante against Indian rebels in Palo Blanco; chart showing the general military status of San Antonio de Bexar, chart includes list of military officials and soldiers, horses, mules and different kinds of weapons; statistical chart showing population of the pueblos of Nuevo Santander, its missions and population in every city and town; complete review is carried out of the presidios of the province of Nuevo Santander, report about the visita is sent to the viceroy, report takes into account physical aspects, military conditions, troop's health situation, description of the valleys, rivers and strategic position of presidios. Summary
Concerns 'cuentas y gastos' of compania volante assigned to escort 'collera' of Apaches, held as prisoners of war, to Mexico City. Documents out of sequence; begin with Varela requesting funds for compania's return to Chihuahua, request granted, Varela ordered to turn money over to 'habilitado' of compania. Documents from earlier in year concern compania's receipt of some 108 Apache men and women of all ages (numbers vary); 'estado' included lists age, sex of 'piezas de Apache,' daily amount of 'reales' allotted to each; sargento comments that Apaches from New Mexico might join group. Sargento becomes gravely ill, Varela and Sartorio placed in charge. Bulk of expediente includes oficios from ranch owners and merchants in towns indicating receipt of payment for goods sold to compania, such as 'fresadas,' meat, corn, firewood, 'toros, Bueyes, Mulas,' and 'semitas.' Chavero, a rancher, sells compania 40 Mulas. 'relacion' of number of Apaches added to 'collera' along way, number who died or were too ill to continue; request fulfilled to bury several 'parbulos Apaches' in Chihuahua cemetery; gentile Apache buried in 'campo'; fray relays that dying Apache woman requests baptism. Returning to time period of beginning of expediente, virrey reviews compania finances and finds everything in order, except 'juramento' of officers involved missing. (L. Kerr, April 1989)
