Details and budgets of repairs on real carcel de Corte of real Sala del Crimen in Mexico by ingeniero Mascaro. Urgent repairs needed on dungeon and repair and enlargement of men's and women's prisons to avoid misconduct among inmates. Budget for dungeon prepared by Castera and funds approved by real hacienda. Ff. 25-27 good description of physical layout of surrounding area of carcel de Corte and types of people using the Callejon leading to entrance. Proximity to Alcalde's residence danger to official's families by criminals. Need for better security and cleanliness to instill good behavior in prisoners. Mascaro forcefully defends need for better social conditions for prisoners as well as welfare of officials. Ff. 29-31 budget of Mascaro for work on Alcalde's Palace, and prisions. Recommendations for solutions to problems, such as building new entrance to prisons. Series of documents on fiscal matters and royal ordances. Work began February 24 and concluded April 16, 1791. Summary
Summary of embezzlement charge against Sal and investigation into debt in funds he managed. Interrogations made by Soler seeking knowledge of vices, distractions or other expenses beyond the expected made by Sal. Witnesses agree that expenses of accused were inflated but no vices were observed. Sal's inventory of 23 different items (f.185), including items of cloth, sword, ink well, pistols, flasks, livestock, and otter pelts and their monetary values to be received by depository. Sal provides listing of charges and expenses produced under his leadership from January 1782 to September 1787. Accountants Zuniga and Arguello provide similar listing (f.230-236) for same time period. Sal presents a defense (f.239-242).(J. Hiller, December 1988)

Summary
Continuation of correspondence with Escandon concerning affairs along Costa del Seno Mexicano; epidemic of unspecified disease which has caused suspension of labor in mines of Sierra Tamaulipa; damage to corn crops and livestock caused by drought in 1764; petitions virrey to promote to rank of Mariscal; sends expedition to survey northern coastline of Nuevo Santander. Expedition describes complex system of outer sand banks, discovery of Island off of San Juan mission near mouth of Nuezes discovery of wreckages of English and French ships. Also includes accounts of establishment of three Villas along coast between mouths of Rios Grande and Nuezes, and of theft of livestock by Indians inhabiting Sierra Sihuy. (A. Tukey, July 1989)
