Neve's letters to Peru, 1783 concerning frontier military affairs. Tells Peru that even though he is comandante de la primera division, capitan Martinez is to lead Apache campaign, because Janos presidio under seige from Gila Apaches- Gila Apaches seeking revenge for murder of their leader Francisquillo and other Gandules, imprisonment of Pachateju. Relays Croix's instructions to mount continuous guerrilla against Apaches in their own territory. Orders Peru to embargo Bacadeguachi missionary Martinez' goods and investigate his sale of barrels to Janos presidio. Orders Peru to join forces with San Buenaventura presidio to mount Apache campaign of 50-60 men while Indians estan en las mescaleras (letter written October 10, 1783; pp.29-32). Tells Peru to have Opatas from Bavispe escort herd of cattle to Arispe. Orders Peru to return Joseph Antonio Olivar, soldier accused of Murdering his wife, to asylum in church. (testimony of various individuals concerning case taken by Peru included here). Argues that murder of 2 Janos soldiers by Apaches could have been prevented if Peru took more precautions. States that these (December 17, 1783; pp.59-60) months best time to attack Apaches, because they won't be able to build fires to roast Mescal. Spaniards exchange 3 Apache girls taken on campaign in Sierra Florida for 2 Spanish boys, 1 mulato Boy taken by Apaches in Valle de San Buenaventura, Santa Cruz de Tapacolmas at Malpais. Tapia commands Apaches to help him look for missing soldier Felix guerra. In earlier letter (January 17, 1778), pp.221-223, Tapia notes Apaches' wish to delay prisoner exchange until end of Mescal harvest, request for Apache girls currently in households of Crespo, O'Conor. Apaches reassure him they are enemies of recalcitrant chiricahuis. additional documents concerning prisoner exchange. Apache woman, age 35, testifies thru soldier- interpreter Gonzalez that Mimbres Apache leaders Nantaneju, Pachatiju and el Surdo were keeping peace and had sent Messages to Apaches in Rio del Norte, Sierra Blanca, Sierra Chiricagui, and Sierra Hacha (Acha) to keep peace as well. Lengthy description of Yaqui revolt, focusing on Yaqui rebel leaders Muni and Bernabe. Notes Muni's attempt to unite himself with Yaqui rebel forces under Siboli. Describes imprisonment, interrogation of Muni and Bernabe at Buenavista. Bernabe admits he called junta de Echizeros para desterrar la enfermedad G. Avia en su pueblo (Huiribis) (pg.254). Soldiers find Peyote in Muni's Bolsa. Describes Muni's Bernabes's beheading. States Muni yelled no tengo yo la culpa, sino esse governor Viejo dn. Manuel, Mendivil, y Quiroz. describes battle between Yaqui allies of Spaniards from Rahum, Potam against rebels. Notes beheadings of various rebels, including Juan Calixto. Summary
First letter (7/14/1741) a lengthy diatribe concerning Yaqui revolt, including- 1) perfidy/imprisonment of 2 Yaqui leaders of rebellion, Muni and Bernabe, from Rahum, Huirivis, at Buenavista presidio; use of Peyote by Yaqui hechiceros; severe criticism of Huidobro; execution of Muni, Bernabe at Buenavista June 23, 1741; rebellion led by Juan Calixto Ayamea, also from Rahum; peace prevailing presently at Garcia's own Pueblo of Torim. Eloquent presentation of Spanish view of rebellion. Second letter (4/30/1742) describes campaign of teniente Canas, 12 soldiers against rebel group of Mayos, Yaquis and Pimas led by Siboli in which Canas, another soldier died; ultimate destruction of Siboli's band, more criticism of Huidobro for his arbitrary dispensation of justice; praises sizeable number of Yaquis who remained faithful to Spaniards, blames Huidobro for rise of los Munis, los Bernabes, los Calixtos.
