Summary
Chiricahuas send 2 emissaries to Tapia telling him to come to Sierra del Medio to get Felix Guerra, Spanish soldier held by Chiricahuas. At same time, emissary from Gilenos, Mimbrenos under Nataneju, Pachateju, el Surdo tells Tapia Chiricahuas planning a trap. Tapia assembles 72 soldiers, including militia from El Paso under Miranda, Opatas under general Varela, Marches to el Medio. Chiricahuas ransom guerra for 10 horses, then 300 of them appear to attack Spaniards. Because of ruggedness of territory, Tapia retreats to presidio. Muniz commends Tapia on his caution, tells him Gila Apaches have many Spanish prisoners in mountains. (T. Sheridan) (1977)
