Letter from Cancio to viceroy regarding horses stolen by Indians while military personnel in bivouac were sleeping. Military personnel guilty of undisciplined acts. Cancio feels perpetrators were Subvapas rather than Huaquis or Pimas. Cancio informs of sending different groups to protect haciendas and pueblos as Indians also stole many mules in raid. (A. Mentions Indians' wasteful killing of animals, closing of mines, village desertion. Cites bravery of woman who shot Indians in self-defense. Mentions increase in number of men necessary for defense against Indians. Relates Indian murders at presidio Tanos; theft of mules/horses from mining group; use of Nortenas of junta subalterna to expatriate Jesuits; 2) deplorable state of missions, intent to improve missions by recapturing escaped Indians; 3) Velazquez' attempt to establish jury from Indians/paisanos; 4) state of militia at San Juan Potosi and Guanajuato; 5) imprisonment of Tarumares who guided Apaches; 6) success of joint Opata-presidio campaign efforts. Acknowledges resignment of Martinez lorionado and Cruz. Acevedo de Elyzondo mentions wide rage of hostilities, scarcity of arms. Documents listing rights and obligations to citizens of Presas del Rey upon foundation of Villa by capitan de la Serna. Establishment of church, garrison, and other official offices. Requests by Serna to abolish residency, judgeship and sentencing surety as few people know him, he also requests title of capitan to be given to him as founder and teniente to his son Estevan, titles are approved. Priests requests money for sinodos and traveling expenses. Conde de la Sierra Gorda sends city charter, maps, titles of Solares to build houses viceroy frees Villa for Ten years payment of primicias to church. Other documents relate disturbances in town due to absence of priest. Document refers to historical event about sinodos when churches were secularized in 1734 by request of provincial of Zacatecas. Summary
Preneda upon assuming office as gobernador Interino reports on status of presidio at Santiago de Moncloa, Coahuila. He comments on lack of gunpowder, lack of care of weapons, physical conditions of buildings, relations with surrounding Indians (resistance, horse thefts, etc.). Details conditions of weapons, gunpowder, horses and mules for each of 39 officers and soldiers at presidio in 1739 and awaits further orders from viceroy. (J. M. Johnson, December 1986)
