Summary
Serra reports on the return of the frigate San-Tiago from her explorations. Crespi and Pena were apparently on board, and their diaries are reported with parts enclosed (although they are not included in the correspondence file). Summary
The diary recounts a sea voyage along the coast of California, leaving the bay of San Bernabe with a final destination of San Diego, although the diary ends before this point is reached. The customs, language, and technology of Indians, who came to the ship by canoe as well as those which were reached by landing parties are discussed. Summary
Document is a copy of a letter by fr. Francisco Palou which contains excerpts from fr. Juan Crespi's diary of an expedition to the northern coasts. He speaks contact with natives who approach the boat. Description centers on stature and clothing of the natives, their activities around the Spanish ship, and the materials they brought for trading, and wished in return. They gave mostly wooden material and were primarily interested in large iron implements in exchange. (C. Briggs) (1975)

Arteaga ill with eye infection thus can not go on ship; diary of Arteagas eventual trip to California, describes in general terms being blown off course, unloading ballast in Monterrey, transporting Neve, drops of supplies in presidios along coast, is followed by a Spy ship, drops off and picks up passengers including missionaries at San Carlos and Santa Clara; short, detailed list of supplies received signed by Junipero Serra and Gallo; addendum of Artega's diary describes San Francisco bay; Hijosa requests return to Spain, arrangments for successor; notice of arrival of two new surgeons in San Blas with salaries; Hijosa clears his accounts in order to get permision to leave San Blas (p. Speaks of the Pueblo de la Canal and its inhabitants, including mention of technology and social organization.
