Summary
In 1804, Juan Brown (Negro) (Anglo-Americano) deserts fragata Ocain off of San Quintin, B.C., asks comandante of San Diego presidio to relay to appropriate authorities his request for baptism in order to remain in Spanish territory. Documents include cuenta de los socorros franquedos detailing expenses incurred by Brown while in Spanish custody. Joaquin Felix (Alias Tomson, Manuel Jose Joaquin) deserts from fragata Alexander, claims he is baptised Catholic and volunteers to render service to Spain. Later documents, perhaps confusing him with another American, state his baptism occurred in Mexico in 1806. Later documents say he solicited a pasaporte and position as pilot in Spanish navy, but disappeared in Mexico, final whereabouts unknown. Good intentions of his baptism and stay in New Spain questioned by officials. (J. M. Johnson, November 1986).

Notes
References to individuals confusing: Joaquin Gelix (also known as Tomson, Manuel Jose Joaquin) referred to as Irlandes, de la nacion Irlandesa, and Anglo-Americano. Claimed he was baptised Catholic, later documents say he was baptised. Juan Brown, here said to be Negro, but in earlier folios (1-40) he was captain of a ship. Documents out of chronological order. Many pages blank, some duplicated, several barely legible.
