Detailed descriptions of Nayarit and native inhabitants, with especially rich account by covarribias (ff. 66-69). Includes accounts of phonetics and grammatical structure of Indian language, Indian diet, general nature of Indians, and problems facing their conversion to christianity. Also describes geography, climate, fruits and vegetation, and wildlife (especially problems with vampire bats) of Nayarit. Concludes with Series of pleas to viceroy for payment of reparations for damage caused to Indian lands and life by conquest and governorship of Flores de San Pedro. (A. Tukey, July 1988)

Concerns Ugarte's military service history in Europe and Mexico relates his inception, accomplishments, and promotions and a mention of all titles. Asks Flores to review records and compare accomplishments to Ugalde's, says has 10-17 years experience. Regarding information virrey has received, Ugarte says it's his word against Ugalde's. says he has sacrificed all for royal service and should not be diminished now. Claims results with pacification. says Apaches do not convert or be part of Spanish system. Disagrees with tactics used by Ugalde, says inconvenient and inefficient. Contains description of Indian pacification campaigns, warring Indian nations and conditions of provincias in which wars occur. says Seris in Pitic peaceful and dedicated. Summary
Concerns formation and development of comandancia general. Plan devised by Croix and Galvez in 1768. Real titulo gave Croix command of provincias with salary of 20,000 pesos. Includes confirmations of Croix' title by various persons. Due to death of Neve, title given to Ugarte. Contains some of Galvez' original instructions for area. Includes boundaries of jurisdiction and instructions for delegated authority, residence, a mint, an auditor de guerra and his salary. Plan was for territories to develop and expand. Provided them with a secretary with a set salary and determined the number of troops for area. Concerns conversions in area. Suggests using loyal Indian tribes like Opatas against Apaches. Pacification in area to be facilitated by monthly reports and regular communication with California and Sonora. Suggests relocating some Spanish families to California. Contained instructions for provisions ships to be built to carry supplies to California. Comandante general should not take gifts or allow celebrations which are merely waste of funds and may not take food or provisions from presidios. He should watch for abuses and report them in monthly reports and biannual relaciones of conditions. Contains several documents of same historical information. Under Flores, Ugalde is given title of brigadier and given military control of Coahuila, Texas, Santander and Leon. Flores tells governors to recognize Ugalde's control. Instructions given to Ugalde as well as his duties. Includes miscellaneous documents concerning king's approval for Galvez' instructions, a real titulo asking Ugarte to formally announce his obedience to Flores. And a royal order describing the authorities given to Flores which were many but limited. (M. Dannemiller, April 1988)

Letters from justicias mayores to viceroys Mayorga and Galvez advising and requesting not to accept peace requested by Apaches Lipanes in Santander due to historical avoidance in order to maintain peace of Indians with Spaniards and other tribes friendly to Spaniards. Justicias mayores detail attacks on towns and haciendas enumerating depredations which include killings by burning of children and women, carrying some prisoners as slaves and tortures of same. Included are documents about depredations carried out by Comanches whose union with Taguayares and Texas have become a force which is very difficult to deal with due to few soldiers in presidios and detachments in towns.
