Summary
De Vargas reports to the viceroy on the state of Indian troubles in Sonora, Sinaloa, and Nueva Mexico. He speaks of the troubles created and alliance and constant communication between the rebel tribes - Apaches, Pimas, Jocomes, Janos, Sumas, Mansos, and the other tribes of Sonora. Specific mention is made of the mission of San Francisco de los Mansos founded by fr. Francisco de Vargas, and inter-marriage between natives of that area and Apaches. (C. Briggs) (1975)

Also unable to place presidio near Casas Grandes, which is outside his province, exposed to Indian attack. Notes stealing horse herd, burning houses, Casas Grandes last September. (T. States Alcalde mayor Casas Grandes captain Salazar planning to evacuate Pueblo unless help arrives, there by abandoning fertile Valley wheat, maize, more than 20,000 cattle. Claims such attack could destroy Opata nation, allies of Spaniards, Sonora itself. Notes Christian Sumas attempting to remain faithful to Spaniards but threatened by hostile Indians. Summary
Beginning about the time of Santaren martyroom in the Sierra de Topia padre Ximenez has written a detailed history of military and missionary efforts to pacify and indoctrinate the Tepehuan, acaxee, xixime and hina people from about 1600-1634. A section on Acaxees describes their marriages, burials, superstitions, agriculture, hunting, fishing, dancing, medicines, dress, musical instruments, vices, eating, cannibalism war customs, etc. Father Ximenex researched the earlier period and was a participant observer in the latter (1620's early 30'). Mentions triumphant visit to Yaqui, Nebome pueblos. Describes Nebomes as most docile nation province. Mentions visit Opata chief Sisibotari, who pledged obedience, requested baptism for himself, his people, described as very docile. Notes presence Aiguines (Aibinos) 4-5 leagues from Sisibotari pueblos who also request conversion, are enemies Nebomes. States Nures, well disposed to christianity, and to Hurdaide in past, should be reduced as well. Describes Nure aid war materials, livestock, clothing to rebellious Tepehuanes, unrest caused by perverse tlatoles among Nures, also Yaquis, Mayos, by Cacique Coyovera. Describes expedition to Tepahues, numbering 1300, to seize Outlaw Tehuecos hiding there. Reduced Tepahues from mountain fortresses to Rio Mayo settlements, but states 2 priests can't minister to all 17,040 people there and need help (evidently C. 15,740 Mayos). Also reducing Conicaris, other cahita mountain tribe, but not enough land along Rio Mayo all 1,000 members. Requests more missionaries. Notes news alliance between Tepehuanes, Guazapares (warihio group). States 3 guazapare chiefs came to him, giving him mare (yegua), symbol of alliance, saying they could not come earlier because of war with Chinipas. Notes rumors Mineral wealth guazapare range.
